Chapter 2: The Brass Key
The ballroom fell into a suffocating, breathless silence.
Guests standing near the banquet tables lowered their crystal flutes, exchanging uneasy, shocked glances. The bride, standing near the receiving line in her ivory gown, looked at Julian with wide, disturbed eyes.
""Elena... this is a private misunderstanding,"" Julian stammered, his polished baritone cracking into a thin, defensive rattle. ""There is no need to make a scene in front of our guests.""
""You made the scene when you cornered a six-year-old child, Julian,"" Elena replied, her voice cutting through the quiet like a freshly honed blade.
Elena gently took the antique brass key from Mia’s small fingers.
The key was three inches long, cast in heavy solid brass, bearing an intricate engraved monogram on the head: *V.T. — Vault 4B*. It was the master key to the private wall safe in the late patriarch Arthur Vance’s private study—a safe that had allegedly been emptied and sealed two years earlier following Arthur’s death.
""Where did you find this, sweetheart?"" Elena asked softly, kneeling down so she was at eye level with Mia.
Mia snuggled closer to Elena’s neck, her voice small and trembling. ""In the flower basket under the ribbons, Mommy. The man in the black coat dropped it when he was putting the red envelope in his pocket.""
Julian took an involuntary step forward, his hands twitching at his sides. ""That is corporate property! You have no legal right to retain it!""
""I am the Lead Digital Forensics Auditor for the Chatham County Judicial District, Julian,"" Elena said, standing tall. ""This key is now physical evidence in an active felony child endangerment and corporate fraud inquiry. If you take one more step toward my daughter, I will have the uniformed bailiffs at the door place you in handcuffs.""
