Chapter 4: The Escape to the Marsh

The thirty-minute drive across the causeway toward Tybee Island brought a cleansing, salt-scented silence.

Elena Nolan was not an ordinary guest at that wedding. Three years earlier, she had been married to Julian’s younger brother, David Vance—a brilliant, gentle maritime architect who had died under mysterious circumstances during a private yacht testing trial. Following David’s death, Julian and his mother had ruthlessly frozen Elena out of the family trust, claiming David had died insolvent and leaving Elena to raise baby Mia on her own.

Elena had rebuilt her life through relentless intellectual discipline, becoming one of the most respected cybersecurity and digital evidence experts in the Southeast. She had attended the wedding only because David’s estate probate was finally being closed.

She had never anticipated that her daughter would stumble upon the physical key that unlocked David’s stolen legacy.

Elena pulled her SUV into the driveway of *The Driftwood Sanctuary*—a two-story weathered cedar-shingle cottage nestled among coastal live oaks and tidal salt marshes on the northern tip of Tybee Island.

Her older brother, Marcus, stepped onto the screened porch holding a flashlight.

""Elena? What happened? You weren't supposed to be back until midnight,"" Marcus said, noticing Mia asleep against Elena’s shoulder.

""Julian cornered Mia at the reception, Marcus,"" Elena said, carrying her daughter inside. ""He tried to intimidate her for finding this.""

Elena set the heavy brass key on the kitchen table.

Marcus looked at the monogrammed brass, his face hardening with righteous anger. ""That’s Arthur’s private ledger key. The one Julian swore under oath was lost in the river.""

""It wasn't lost,"" Elena said, her eyes burning with resolute clarity. ""It was hidden. And tomorrow morning, we find out what David died trying to protect.""
