Chapter 10: The Deposition of Arrogance

On Wednesday morning, the mandatory pre-trial evidentiary hearing took place in Federal District Court before Senior Judge William Harrison.
Julian Vance sat at the defense table in a drab, orange federal detention jumpsuit, his wrists shackled to his waist. His slicked hair was unkempt, his face pale and hollow, his manufactured arrogance completely incinerated by the weight of forensic reality.
Elena Nolan took the witness stand wearing an understated charcoal wool blazer, her dark hair pulled back into a clean knot, holding herself with majestic, calm poise.
When Julian’s defense counsel attempted to cross-examine her regarding the chain of custody of the brass key, Elena answered with effortless, devastating clarity.
""The physical key has distinct microscopic metallurgical striations matching the internal tumblers of Vault 4B,"" Elena testified, her voice clear and carrying across the silent gallery. ""The hard drive recovered from the vault contains un-tampered system logs verifying that Julian Vance authorized the illegal wire transfers and falsified the probate filings within forty-eight hours of David Vance’s passing.""
She turned her gaze to Julian.
""You thought you could intimidate a six-year-old child because you believed power belonged to whoever shouted the loudest in a ballroom,"" Elena said, looking directly into his sunken eyes. ""But truth does not need to shout. It is recorded, it is preserved, and it will outlast every lie you ever told.""
Julian buried his face against the defense table, weeping pathetic, defeated tears as Judge Harrison banged his wooden gavel.

""Bail is permanently denied,"" Judge Harrison ruled. ""The defendant will remain in federal custody pending trial.""
