The wooden walkway leading from the cottage to the tidal dock had suffered rot during the winter storms. Elena hired an independent local boatbuilder and master timber carpenter named Thomas Mercer to rebuild the structure.
Thomas was thirty-seven, a tall, broad-shouldered man with sun-weathered hands, calm slate-grey eyes, dark hair dusted with cedar sawdust, and a quiet, deeply respectful presence. He had served six years as a Coast Guard rescue technician before opening his custom wooden skiff workshop near the harbor.
Thomas worked with unhurried, rhythmic precision, measuring joints with an antique brass folding rule and shaping white cedar beams with hand planes.
Whenever Mia was playing in the garden, Thomas worked with quiet hand tools, always pausing to answer her curious questions about sea turtles, constellations, and boat rigging.
""That's virgin white cedar we’re setting into the sand, Elena,"" Thomas said one afternoon as Elena brought him a mason jar of fresh iced sweet tea. ""Built to withstand salt spray and fifty-knot gales without splitting. When you build with honest wood, you don't have to fear the weather.""
Elena sat on the cedar bench, watching his capable, steady hands.

Thomas paused, wiping his brow with a clean bandana, looking directly into her eyes with pure, uncalculated reverence. ""Paper burns and lies rot, Elena. But a home built on truth stands forever. You’ve given that little girl an anchor. Nothing is going to shake her.""
