Chapter 6: The Gilded Injunction

On Thursday afternoon, the legal machinery of the Vance dynasty launched its first aggressive maneuver.
A sleek black town car drove down the sand road to the cottage. A senior partner from the high-priced litigation firm *Sterling, Cross & Vance* stepped onto the porch, delivering a formal emergency summons from the Chatham County Superior Court.
The document was an emergency petition for an ex parte injunction demanding:
1. The immediate surrender of the brass key and all accompanying physical artifacts.
2. A temporary restraining order preventing Elena from disseminating the ballroom CCTV footage to law enforcement or media.
3. A $5 million civil liability claim for ""intentional spoliation of private corporate property and defamation.""
Elena stood on the porch in her linen work shirt and jeans, holding the legal papers in her hand.
""Mr. Vance is offering a confidential $2 million settlement if the key is returned within twenty-four hours,"" the attorney stated in a practiced, condescending tone. ""Otherwise, we will file for immediate emergency sanctions.""
Elena looked at the attorney with absolute, serene composure.
""Tell Julian Vance three things, counselor,"" Elena said, her voice ringing clear in the coastal breeze. ""First, the CCTV footage was already entered into the Federal Criminal Information Center database at eight o'clock this morning. Second, my daughter's safety cannot be bargained for with stolen money. And third... tell him to keep his defense team on retainer, because the Department of Justice will be knocking on his door before Friday.""

Elena handed the summons back, closed the door, and locked it.
