Chapter 13: An Unbroken Guardianship

On August 14, the Chatham County Probate Court held a final, celebratory hearing.

Presiding Judge Evelyn Harrison entered the courtroom wearing her judicial robes, smiling warmly at the family gathered before her.

Elena sat at the petitioner’s table in a clean linen suit, holding seven-year-old Mia by the hand. Beside them sat Marcus and Thomas Mercer.

""In the matter of the Estate of Arthur Vance and David Vance,"" Judge Harrison read from the gold-sealed decree. ""This court finds that all fraudulent filings are vacated with prejudice. The court hereby recognizes **Mia Evelyn Vance** as the sole legal heir to the Vance Family Foundation and its associated real estate trusts, with full, unencumbered fiduciary guardianship granted permanently to her mother, **Elena Nolan Vance**.""

Judge Harrison brought down her gavel with a firm, joyful crack.

Mia cheered, throwing her arms around Elena’s neck.

Judge Harrison stepped down from the bench, handing Mia her certified, gold-sealed certificate of trust.

""You have a mother of extraordinary courage, Mia,"" the judge said gently.
