CHAPTER 6: The Hearing Begins

Friday morning arrived with grey rain pouring down over the city's central courthouse.

Inside Courtroom 4B, the atmosphere was thick with tension. On one side sat Richard Chen—a cold, sharp man in a tailored three-piece suit—surrounded by four high-powered corporate lawyers. On the other side sat Julian, dressed simply, holding Lily’s hand under the wooden desk.

Judge Eleanor Vance, an elderly woman known for her strict adherence to justice, took her seat at the bench.

""We are here to determine the temporary guardianship of the minor known as Lily Vance,"" Judge Vance announced, reviewing the files. ""Mr. Richard Chen, state your position.""

Richard stood up smoothly, adjusting his silk tie. ""Your Honor, this child appeared out of nowhere at a public function carrying an antique piece belonging to our family vault. We believe this is an organized attempt by unknown actors to extort the Chen estate. The child should be placed in protective state custody until a full fraud investigation is completed.""

""That is absurd!"" Marcus rose from Julian's table. ""We have submitted preliminary medical records and a sworn affidavit from the shelter administrator who cared for Clara Vance before her passing!""

""Paperwork can be forged, Counsel,"" Richard replied smoothly, a faint, cold smile on his lips. ""Without definitive genetic proof, this child is legally a stranger.""
