CHAPTER 2: The Whispers of the Past

The guests in the ballroom began to whisper. High society figures swapped bewildered glances, holding their champagne flutes half-raised. Victoria’s face grew pale, transitioning rapidly from anger to embarrassment.
""Julian, don't be ridiculous!"" Victoria snapped, her voice tightening. ""Your father passed away five years ago. If there were another heir, the family trust would have known. You’re letting sentimentality cloud your judgment in front of the entire city!""
""My father hid Clara to keep her safe from the board,"" Julian said, standing up slowly. He extended a warm, gentle hand to Lily. ""Come here, little one. You’re safe now.""
Lily hesitated for a second, her tiny shoes scuffed against the cold marble floor. But looking into Julian’s gentle, protective eyes, she felt a sudden warmth she hadn't experienced since her mother passed away three months ago. She reached out and wrapped her small, cold hand around Julian’s fingers.
""Where have you been living, Lily?"" Julian asked softly, crouching down to her eye level, completely ignoring Victoria and the staring crowd.
""In the shelter downtown..."" Lily whispered, looking down at her scuffed shoes. ""A nice lady named Sarah helped me hide in the delivery truck so I could bring the silver spoon here. Mommy told me if I ever got lost, I had to find the building with the golden crest...""

Julian felt a sharp pain in his chest. His little sister—a child of royalty and art—had been living in a cold shelter while he sat in luxury penthouses.
""You don't have to hide anymore,"" Julian promised, his voice thick with emotion. ""I'm taking you home.""
