Chapter 8 - The Cliffside Estate

The black town car rolled to a halt in front of an imposing, ultra-modern glass mansion perched precariously on a jagged cliff overlooking the turbulent ocean. The waves smashed relentlessly against the rocks far below, sending plumes of white spray into the moonlight. I stared up at the dark, looming structure, realizing with a sinking heart that this was Julian’s private ancestral home—a place he had never once brought me to during our two-year courtship.
The driver stepped out, opening my door with mechanical efficiency. I stepped out onto the cold stone driveway, the heavy lace of my wedding gown dragging in the dirt. Julian emerged from the other side, adjusting his tuxedo jacket with effortless grace.
“Where are we?” I demanded, wrapping my arms tightly around myself against the biting coastal wind.
“My family’s estate,” Julian replied, walking toward the towering front glass doors. “A place where we won't be interrupted by police sirens, wedding guests, or desperate phone calls from your mother.”
He pressed his thumb against a biometric scanner beside the door, and the massive glass panels slid open with a soft hiss. Inside, the interior was minimalist, cold, and dominated by floor-to-ceiling windows framing the dark, churning sea. Multiple computer monitors lined a sleek mahogany desk in the center of the expansive living room, casting a ghostly blue light across the room.
“You brought me here to keep me prisoner,” I stated flatly, standing my ground near the doorway, refusing to step inside.
Julian turned back, a faint, sardonic smile playing on his lips.
“Not a prisoner, Sarafina. A guest of honor,” Julian corrected smoothly. “You have free roam of the house. Though, I should mention that the nearest cell tower is ten miles away, and the local private security team has standing orders to shoot on sight if anyone attempts to leave without my direct authorization.”
The reality of my situation crashed over me with terrifying force. I wasn't just a suspect in a federal financial crime; I was a captive in a high-tech fortress, married to a man who had orchestrated an elaborate, multi-year conspiracy to destroy my life.
“You’re insane,” I whispered, taking a step backward toward the edge of the cliff driveway.
“No, Sarafina. I’m meticulous,” Julian said, stepping closer. He reached into his tuxedo pocket and pulled out my smartphone, holding it up just out of my reach. “And since your phone is currently receiving a text message from an unknown number regarding the true whereabouts of your father, I figured you’d want to read it together.”
My breath caught in my throat. My father had supposedly been traveling abroad on business for the past week, completely unreachable.

I snatched the phone from his hand, my fingers trembling as I unlocked the screen. The unread message on the glowing display read: “Sarafina, do not trust Julian. He didn't just steal the money—he killed the lead investigator to frame your family first. Run now.”
