Chapter 10 - The Second Gunman

The cold, distorted voice echoed down from the darkened second-floor loft, chilling me to the bone. Julian’s body remained tense and rigid over mine, his grip on his firearm rock-solid as he aimed upward toward the shadows of the balcony.

“Identify yourself!” Julian shouted back, his voice cutting through the ambient sound of the crashing waves outside.

“You spent three years digging for ghosts, Julian, but you forgot to check who buried them,” the voice replied, followed by the slow, deliberate sound of heavy boots descending the metal spiral staircase.

As the figure stepped out from the shadows into the faint blue glow of the remaining computer screens, my breath caught. It was a man in a tailored dark tactical suit, wearing a matte black comms headset. But it wasn't a federal agent or a hired mercenary. It was Arthur Vance—Julian’s older brother, who had supposedly died in a climbing accident five years prior.

Julian slowly lowered his weapon slightly, his face draining of all remaining color. A rare look of absolute disbelief crossed his features.

“Arthur?” Julian whispered, the name escaping his lips like a prayer of horror. “You’re... you’re dead. I identified the body.”

Arthur let out a cold, cynical chuckle, keeping his assault rifle trained squarely on Julian’s chest.

“You identified a body that was conveniently provided by your current father-in-law’s security detail,” Arthur corrected, stepping onto the main floor. “Our dear father wasn't killed over an audit, Julian. He was killed because he discovered that both of our families were laundering cartel money through the pediatric hospital endowment fund.”

I stared back and forth between the two brothers, the entire foundation of my reality crumbling away into dust. The wedding, the eighty-two million dollars, the forged documents, the framed arrest—it was all a fraction of a much larger, darker war between powerful dynasties.

“That’s impossible,” Julian said, standing up slowly while keeping me behind him. “I verified every ledger. Sarafina’s family—”

“Sarafina’s family is just a convenient scapegoat, exactly like you were meant to be,” Arthur interrupted, stepping closer, his finger resting lightly on the trigger. “And now that you’ve successfully transferred the eighty-two million dollars into our offshore master account using her credentials, the trap is fully closed.”

Julian froze. He looked down at the silver laptop still sitting on the desk behind Arthur. The screen was no longer displaying the eighty-two million. It was counting down from sixty seconds in glowing red numbers.

“You didn't just want the money back, Arthur,” Julian realized with horror. “You used me to execute the final transfer so the federal cyber division would trace the entire crime back to us.”

Arthur smiled darkly as the red numbers on the laptop screen ticked down. 00:45.

“And the best part?” Arthur whispered. “The building is wired with fifty pounds of C4. In forty seconds, this entire cliffside estate—and everyone inside it—ceases to exist.”
