Chapter 14 - The Final Confrontation at Pier Four

The Zodiac drifted silently against the barnacle-encrusted wooden pilings of Pier Four. Towering cargo containers stretched out like a labyrinth of steel mazes beneath the amber glare of sodium vapor lights. At the far end of the pier, a massive international container ship idled quietly, its loading ramp lowered as heavy crates were hoisted aboard by an automated crane.

Julian secured the boat to a rusted cleat, motioning for me to stay low as we crept up the wooden ladder onto the damp concrete of the pier.

“Arthur will be heading for the captain’s quarters on the upper deck to finalize the transfer protocols,” Julian whispered, checking the magazine of his sidearm. “We split up. You secure the lower gantry and cut the communication relays. I’ll meet you at the main loading bay.”

“No,” I said firmly, grabbing his arm. “We stay together. Arthur is expecting a lone wolf, not a united front.”

Julian looked at me for a split second, a flicker of profound admiration crossing his face, before nodding in agreement.

We moved as a single unit through the labyrinth of shipping containers, utilizing the shadows to mask our approach. Every footstep on the gravel felt deafeningly loud against the background hum of the idling ship engines. As we reached the base of the primary gantry stairs leading to the upper deck, a sharp click of a weapon being cocked echoed from the shadows above.

“I wondered how long it would take you two lovebirds to catch up,” Arthur’s voice drifted down from the metal staircase.

We froze, weapons raised, as Arthur stepped out onto the metal landing above us. He wasn't alone. Two armed mercenaries flanked him on either side, their assault rifles trained directly on our chests.

“Drop the weapons, Julian. Sarafina,” Arthur mocked, smiling coldly. “You played your parts brilliantly. The eighty-two million is already clearing through three different foreign jurisdictions. By morning, we’ll all be untouchable ghosts.”

“You forgot one detail, Arthur,” Julian said, his voice terrifyingly calm as he slowly lowered his right hand toward his pocket.

“And what’s that, little brother? Your heroic speeches?” Arthur laughed.

“I didn't come here to stop the transfer,” Julian replied, pulling his hand out of his pocket and holding up a small digital override module. “I came here to activate the federal tracking beacon hidden inside the master account you just stole.”

Arthur’s smile vanished instantly. Before he could scream an order to fire, the deafening roar of overhead helicopter rotors shattered the night sky. Three black tactical helicopters burst from behind the low-hanging clouds, instantly flooding the entire pier with blinding white searchlight beams.

“Federal Bureau of Investigation! Drop your weapons!” Agent Miller’s amplified voice bellowed from the lead chopper.
