Chapter 4 - The Federal Warrant

The heavy oak doors of the Grandview Ballroom swung open with a resounding thud, cutting off the remaining whispers of the terrified wedding guests. Two federal agents in dark suits strode purposefully across the polished hardwood floor, flanked by local uniformed police officers. The lead agent flashed a silver badge, his eyes scanning the opulent room before locking instantly onto Julian holding the open silver laptop.
“Agent Miller, Federal Financial Crimes Division,” the lead agent announced, his voice carrying effortlessly over the stunned silence of the room. “We received an automated flag regarding an unauthorized transfer of eighty-two million dollars originating from this venue.”
Julian calmly lowered the laptop and extended his free hand to shake the agent’s hand, acting entirely like a cooperative citizen rather than a groom whose wedding had just been turned into a crime scene.
“I’m Julian Vance. The transfer was initiated from my wife’s personal digital device, using her biometric credentials,” Julian stated clearly, pointing directly at me where I stood frozen in my white lace gown.
The collective gasp from the crowd was deafening. My mother let out a soft cry and slumped against the golden bridesmaid, who was now weeping openly. I felt the floor drop out from beneath my feet. The sheer betrayal of Julian handing me over to federal authorities on our wedding day paralyzed my vocal cords.
“Sarafina Vance?” Agent Miller asked, stepping toward me with a pair of cold steel handcuffs glinting ominously in his hand. “You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.”
“Wait,” I choked out, finally finding my voice as I held up my hands defensively. “This is a complete mistake. My husband—he set this up. He manipulated my device this morning. Ask him to show you the metadata on the network router.”
Agent Miller glanced briefly at Julian, then back to me with a practiced, sympathetic expression that signaled he had heard every excuse in the book.
“All digital logs, IP addresses, and device signatures point directly to your personal tablet, Mrs. Vance,” Agent Miller replied flatly. “We can examine the router logs at the precinct, but right now, you need to come with us.”

The cold steel cuffs clicked sharply around my wrists, biting into my skin over the lace of my wedding dress. As the officers turned me toward the exit, I caught a final glimpse of Julian standing beneath the glittering chandeliers, closing the laptop with a quiet, lingering click.
