Chapter 1 - The Golden Ballroom Confrontation

The crystal chandeliers of the Grandview Ballroom cast a brilliant, glittering light over the hundred guests gathered to celebrate what was supposed to be the happiest day of my life. I stood draped in heavy white lace and a floor-length veil, my heart fluttering with the gentle nervousness typical of any bride. My husband, Julian, stood directly in front of me, immaculately tailored in his black tuxedo with a crisp white boutonniere pinned to his lapel. The heavy silence that suddenly suffocated the room was not romantic. It was terrifying.
Julian’s hand was steady as he raised a sleek silver laptop directly into my line of sight. The glowing screen displayed a single, massive figure in bold numbers: $82,000,000.
“Sarafina, $82,000,000,” Julian said, his voice terrifyingly calm, cutting through the ambient hum of the ballroom like a razor blade.
My breath hitched in my throat. I stared at the silver laptop screen in utter disbelief as muffled gasps rippled through the crowd behind me. My bridesmaid, standing just to my left in a radiant golden dress, raised both hands to her mouth, her eyes wide with mounting panic.
“I never approved this,” I whispered back, my voice trembling as the sheer gravity of the number began to sink into my conscious mind.
Julian didn't blink. He maintained his intense, unyielding gaze, his jaw tightening as the high emotional drama of the moment locked every guest in place. I looked intensely at him, a fierce surge of rising agitation and confrontation completely overriding my initial shock.
“You’re overreacting,” I snapped, my tone defensive as the panic threatened to swallow me whole.
Julian didn't back down. He leaned in closer, his expression terrifyingly serious.

“I am not overreacting, Sarafina. That is every penny of the endowment fund for the pediatric wing of the city hospital. And you transferred it this morning,” Julian said quietly, handing me the keyboard as a flashing notification revealed the transfer originated from my personal device.
