Chapter 11 - The Sixty-Second Countdown

The glowing red numbers on the laptop screen ticked downward relentlessly. 00:38. 00:37.
The hum of the countdown filled the silent room, drowning out even the sound of the crashing ocean waves outside. Arthur kept his assault rifle locked on us, a smug, untouchable smile plastered across his scarred face.
“You psychotic bastard,” Julian muttered, his eyes darting frantically around the room, assessing escape routes through the shatterproof glass walls.
“I’m just finishing what our father started,” Arthur replied, taking a slow step backward toward the exit doors behind him. “Have a nice eternity, little brother.”
Before Arthur could pivot toward the sliding glass panels, I lunged forward with a desperate burst of adrenaline. Gathering the heavy layers of my white lace wedding dress in my hands, I hurled a heavy ceramic vase straight from the side table directly at Arthur’s head.
Arthur ducked instinctively, the vase shattering against the wall, but the distraction was all Julian needed. With blinding speed, Julian fired a single shot that struck the wall-mounted security panel beside the door, triggering the emergency steel blast shutters.
Heavy steel plates slammed downward from the ceiling with a deafening crash, cutting off Arthur’s exit and trapping him in the foyer, while plunging our side of the room into pitch darkness save for the glowing red numbers on the laptop.
00:19. 00:18.
“The manual override!” Julian yelled over the blaring alarm klaxon that had suddenly started screaming overhead. “Underneath the desk! There’s a physical kill-switch for the explosive circuit!”
I didn't hesitate. I scrambled across the hardwood floor, ignoring the sharp glass fragments piercing my bare skin through the torn lace of my gown. I reached beneath the mahogany desk, my fingers frantically searching along the cold metal frame until they brushed against a heavy, toggle-style circuit breaker.
00:08. 00:07.
“I found it!” I screamed, throwing all my weight upward to flip the heavy switch.
The red numbers on the laptop screen flickered violently, stuttered, and then went entirely dark. The blaring alarm klaxon choked out with a harsh electronic whine. Silence descended upon the room, broken only by our ragged, panicked breathing.
For a long moment, neither of us moved. Then, the heavy steel blast shutter guarding the foyer began to grind upward with a mechanical whine, revealing an empty hallway. Arthur was gone, having slipped through a secondary emergency service tunnel.
Julian dropped his empty firearm to the floor, sliding down the side of the desk, his chest heaving as he stared into the darkness.
“He’s gone,” Julian whispered, running a hand through his hair. “And the federal agents are less than five minutes away, tracing the signal from the countdown activation.”
I stood up slowly, brushing the dust and glass from my ruined wedding gown. I looked down at Julian—the man who had deceived me, framed me, and ultimately saved my life.

“We aren't waiting for the feds, Julian,” I said, my voice completely devoid of fear, replaced by a cold, resolute strength. “If we want to survive this, we’re going to hunt Arthur down together.”
