Chapter 3 - Sirens in the Night

Before I could formulate a defense or scream back at the man I had sworn to love just twenty minutes prior, the unmistakable wail of approaching police sirens pierced the glass windows of the Grandview Ballroom. The sound grew rapidly louder, vibrating through the crystal chandeliers and rattling the champagne flutes on the nearby tables.

Guests began to murmur in absolute panic, some slowly backing toward the double doors, desperate to distance themselves from a catastrophic financial scandal involving tens of millions of dollars. My mother clutched her chest, her golden dress rustling as she stumbled backward into a waiter carrying a tray of appetizers.

“Julian, you absolute maniac,” I hissed, stepping forward and grabbing the edge of the silver laptop, trying to force it closed. “You invited the police to our wedding reception?”

Julian gently caught my wrists, his grip firm, immovable, and entirely devoid of affection. His face was a mask of cold resolve.

“I didn't invite the police, Sarafina,” Julian whispered, leaning in so close that only I could hear his words over the escalating chaos. “The federal bank fraud division monitors accounts of this size automatically. When eighty-two million dollars vanishes into a Cayman Islands holding account, the system triggers an immediate lockdown.”

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. Eighty-two million dollars. I had never even seen that kind of money, let alone possessed the capability to move it. Yet, the digital trail bore my credentials, my verified signature, and my personal device ID.

“I didn't do this,” I pleaded, my voice cracking as a tear finally broke free, tracing a hot path down my cheek. “You know my signature was forged. You have the technical skills to pull this off, Julian. Why frame your own wife on your wedding day?”

Julian’s eyes softened for a fraction of a second, replaced instantly by a look of profound, chilling sorrow.

“Because three days ago, I found out what happened to my father’s medical foundation, Sarafina. And your name was on the founding documents of the shell company that bankrupted it.”

Heavy footsteps echoed from the grand staircase outside the ballroom doors, followed by the authoritative flash of blue and red lights painting the ornate walls.

“Mr. Vance?” a deep voice called out from the doorway. “We have a federal warrant.”
