Chapter 2 - Whispers Beneath the Chandeliers

The accusation hung in the heavy ballroom air, suffocating and sharp. The murmured whispers of the elite guests instantly transformed into a chorus of harsh judgment. My mother, dressed in her finest golden evening gown, pushed her way past the catering staff, her face drained of all color as she stared at the glowing laptop screen.
“Sarafina, what is Julian talking about?” my mother demanded, her voice shaking with a mixture of maternal dread and absolute embarrassment. “Explain yourself right now.”
I looked wildly around the room, feeling trapped by the dozens of accusing eyes focused entirely on my white lace gown. The golden bridesmaid was trembling visibly, her fingers still clamped over her mouth as if trying to hold back a scream. Julian kept the laptop raised, a silent, glowing monument to financial ruin and betrayal.
“Mom, stay out of this,” I retorted, my voice sharp with adrenaline. “Julian is setting me up. He has access to my accounts. He’s always managed the digital portfolio.”
Julian let out a cold, humorless laugh that sent a shiver down my spine. He turned the laptop slightly so the front row of guests could catch a glimpse of the digital paper trail.
“Tell them about the offshore shell company, Sarafina,” Julian said softly, his eyes boring into mine. “Tell them about the signature on the authorization form time-stamped at four o'clock this morning, right before you walked down the aisle.”
My mind raced. Four o'clock this morning. I had been asleep. At least, I thought I had been asleep. Then a cold flash of memory hit me like a physical blow. Julian had handed me my tablet to adjust the seating chart before dawn. He had asked for my biometric fingerprint to unlock the wedding planner application.
“You tricked me,” I whispered, the realization dawning with sickening clarity. “You used my biometric authorization for the seating chart to execute the wire transfer.”
Julian tilted his head, neither confirming nor denying the accusation, but a dangerous smile touched the corner of his mouth.

“The forensic accountants will verify the IP address within the hour,” Julian replied smoothly, stepping back. “And they are already waiting in the lobby.”
