Chapter 9 - The Biological Deterrent

The heavy silence in the dining room was broken only by Nia’s ragged breathing and the steady, menacing rhythm of the knocking at the front door. Maya stood frozen, the pieces of the shattered check lying on the rug near her feet, while the true magnitude of her family's betrayal settled over her like a lead shroud.

"A biological deterrent?" Maya repeated, her voice barely a whisper. She looked down at Nia, who was still doubled over in pain, her hands pressed desperately against her stomach. "Dad wasn't a geneticist curing diseases? What are you talking about, Julian?"

Julian Vance lowered the satellite phone, his expression completely devoid of the slick corporate arrogance he had worn just moments before. Now, he looked like a soldier trapped behind enemy lines. "Your father's stroke wasn't natural, Ms. Reynolds. He was poisoned with a synthetic neurotoxin developed by a rogue defense contractor. He managed to smuggle his final genomic sequence out of the cleanroom by embedding the data inside a synthetic human zygote—using your sister as the unwitting carrier."

Nia let out a sharp, choked sob, burying her face in her hands. "They told me it was a fertility trial," she wept, her voice breaking completely. "They said I was helping infertile couples. I didn't know... I swear to God, I didn't know it was a weapon."

Evelyn wrapped her arms around Nia's shaking shoulders, glaring fiercely at Julian. "Leave her alone! She did what you asked! You promised us protection, Julian! You promised that once the transfer was complete, we would be safe!"

"Protection was conditional upon containment, Mrs. Reynolds," Julian replied grimly, turning his attention back to the reinforced steel compartment in the sideboard. He pulled out one of the matte-black tactical firearms, checking the clip with a practiced, metallic click that sent a shiver down Maya's spine. "And containment was breached the moment your other sister walked through that front door tonight and asked about the pregnancy."

Maya felt a hot surge of anger cut through her terror. "Me? You're blaming me for walking into my mother's house to check on my family?"

"I'm blaming human curiosity," Julian said flatly, not looking at her. He pressed a button on the encrypted satellite phone, speaking in a low, rapid code into the receiver. "We have an active perimeter breach at the front entrance. The package is compromised. I need immediate extraction protocols initiated for Sector Four."

Before Marcus could take a step toward the door, the heavy oak front door downstairs shattered inward with an explosive crack that rattled the dishes on the dining table. Splintered wood and shattered glass rained down into the foyer. Heavy, synchronized combat boots hit the hardwood floor of the hallway, moving with terrifying speed toward the dining room archway.

Julian raised his firearm, stepping directly in front of the doorway, his eyes locked on the dark corridor. "Get under the table. Now."
