Chapter 1 - The Accusation Across the Mahogany

Maya slammed her palm against the edge of the mahogany table, rattling the crystal wine glasses and porcelain dinner plates. Her long black hair, pulled back tightly with a velvet black headband, shook with the force of her accumulated rage. She stared down at her sister, Nia, whose face had gone pale under the warm recessed lighting of the dining room.

"Why you acting funny?" Maya demanded, her voice cutting through the heavy silence like a razor blade. "You pregnant or something?"

Nia flinched, instinctively pressing her palms harder against her stomach beneath the rim of the table. She wore a beige satin shirt that caught the light, but the fabric couldn't hide the tremor in her hands.

Marcus, sitting directly beside Nia, kept his braided head bowed low. He stared intently at his empty plate, refusing to look up, his black t-shirt damp with nervous sweat at the collar. He looked like a man who knew the executioner's axe was already falling.

From the arched doorway at the end of the hall, their mother, Evelyn, stepped into the dining room. Her olive-green satin blouse rustled softly as she lifted both hands to her face, her gold earrings catching the chandelier's gleam.

"Maya, stop this instant," Evelyn whispered, her voice trembling with a terrifying, artificial calm. "You have no idea what you just brought into this house."

Maya turned her fierce gaze from Nia to her mother, her chest heaving as she fought for breath. "No, Mom, I'm done being kept in the dark. Every time I come over here, you all act like you're hiding a body. Nia hasn't touched her wine all night, she's sweating through her shirt, and Marcus won't even look me in the eye. Something is fundamentally wrong here."

Nia finally raised her chin, her eyes swimming with unshed tears, but her voice was eerily steady when she spoke. "Maya, if I'm pregnant, it's not Marcus's baby."

May you like

Maya froze, the air leaving her lungs in a sharp gasp. Before she could process the sheer impossibility of the confession, the front door downstairs clicked open with a heavy, deliberate turn of the deadbolt.
