Chapter 4 - The Price of a Bloodline

The silence that followed Julian Vance’s declaration was absolute. The soft hum of the refrigerator in the kitchen sounded like a roaring engine. Maya looked down at the medical documents scattered among the fine china plates. Bold medical letterheads stared back at her: Pacific Reproductive Health Institute. Contract for Gestational Carriage.

Maya picked up the top page, her fingers trembling so violently she could barely hold the paper steady. "A surrogate?" she breathed, her voice cracking as she looked from Julian to Nia. "Nia, you sold your own body to pay off Marcus's gambling debts? Is that why you're holding your stomach? Is that why you look sick every single day?"

Nia dropped her hands from her face, her eyes red-rimmed and fierce. "You think I wanted this, Maya? You think I woke up one morning and decided to rent out my womb? Marcus was going to prison. Mom was going to lose her healthcare. This was the only way the bank would clear the title before the foreclosure went public."

Marcus finally spoke, his voice thick with shame as he stared at his shoes. "It was supposed to be a clean break. The client paid the full balance upfront. We saved the house, Maya. That's why we're all sitting at this table tonight. To celebrate the transfer."

"Celebrate?" Maya screamed, the restraint finally snapping as she threw the medical file across the room, scattering papers everywhere. "You're celebrating human trafficking wrapped in legal paperwork! Whose child is she carrying, Julian? Who bought my sister?"

Julian Vance didn't flinch at the outburst. He calmly retrieved a single folded document from his inside jacket pocket and placed it squarely in front of Maya’s wine glass. "The biological father is a man who values absolute discretion. He paid a premium for exclusivity. But there was a complication discovered during this morning's routine ultrasound."

Evelyn let out a sharp gasp, clutching her olive-green satin blouse over her heart. "Don't tell them," she begged, her voice rising in panic. "Please, Julian, the contract said nothing about this."

Julian ignored Evelyn entirely, keeping his cold, calculating eyes fixed on Maya. "The DNA markers don't match the client on file, Ms. Reynolds. Your sister isn't carrying a stranger's child. She’s carrying your dead father's biological clone."
