Chapter 12 - The Voice on the Other End of the Line

The line crackled with static for two agonizing seconds before a smooth, cultured voice answered from the speaker. It sounded remarkably calm, as if Dr. Arthur Sterling were sitting in a quiet, air-conditioned boardroom rather than listening to a firefight unfold over an encrypted satellite connection.

"Ms. Reynolds," Dr. Sterling said, his tone dripping with an infuriating, paternal amusement. "I must commend your theatrics. But threatening to destroy a multi-billion-dollar scientific breakthrough over family sentimentality is rather short-sighted, don't you think?"

"Call off your men right now, or I swear to God I'll bleed her out on this floor," Maya shouted, her voice cracking with adrenaline and terror. She could hear heavy boots marching closer from the kitchen corridor, the sound of breaking glass echoing through the pantry.

"My men are merely attempting to recover what rightfully belongs to the institute," Sterling replied smoothly. "Your father signed over his life's work before his heart gave out. Your sister signed the gestational contract of her own free will. You are the only variable standing in the way of human progress, Ms. Reynolds."

Nia let out a muffled scream of agony, her hands clawing desperately at Maya's arm. "Maya... make them stop. The baby... I can feel it moving too fast. It's too early!"

Evelyn stroked Nia's damp curly hair, weeping openly, her gold earrings catching the flickers of distant headlights from the street outside. "Arthur, please!" Evelyn cried out, raising her voice so the phone could pick it up. "You promised you wouldn't hurt my girls! We gave you everything!"

Dr. Sterling sighed softly on the other end of the line, a sound of profound, condescending disappointment. "Evelyn, my dear, sentimentality has always been your family's greatest flaw. Julian, are you still receiving this transmission?"

Julian, keeping his tactical firearm aimed squarely at the kitchen archway, spoke without turning around. "I'm here, Doctor."

"Secure the package," Sterling ordered, his voice suddenly turning ice-cold. "Sedate the mother if necessary. The extraction vehicle is pulling up to the back patio right now. Do not fail me again."

The line clicked dead with a sharp tone.

Maya stared at the dead screen in her hand, the blood freezing in her veins. She looked up at Julian, terror gripping her chest. "You're still working for him? Even now?"

Julian didn't lower his weapon, but his jaw tightened visibly as he looked down at Nia, who was now drifting into semi-consciousness from the sheer pain. "I work for the sequence, Ms. Reynolds," Julian muttered quietly. "And right now, the only way that sequence survives is if we get her out of this house alive."

Before Maya could react, the back patio glass doors shattered inward with an overwhelming roar of shouting voices and heavy footsteps.
