Chapter 14 - The Doctor in the Lab Coat

Dr. Arthur Sterling stepped forward into the flickering light of the smoke-filled kitchen, his immaculate lab coat starkly contrasting with the carnage surrounding him. He held the military-grade medical injector steady, the blue fluid inside glowing faintly under the emergency exit lights.

"Put her down gently," Sterling instructed, his voice carrying the chilling authority of a man who viewed human beings as mere biological containers. "The cellular sequence is already under immense thermal stress. One more shock, and the zygote will destabilize."

Julian moved to step in front of Maya and Nia, but Sterling flicked his wrist. Two heavily armed operatives stepped out from the pantry shadows behind Sterling, raising their assault rifles directly at Julian’s chest.

"Don't be foolish, Julian," Sterling chided softly. "You're a professional. You know when an asset has reached its expiration point. The family served their purpose. The debt is settled, the house is foreclosed, and the sequence is ready for full harvesting."

Maya glared at Sterling, venom dripping from every word. "You murdered my father, you manipulated my sister, and you turned our lives into a science experiment. You're not a doctor. You're a monster."

Sterling smiled, a cold, clinical expression that didn't reach his eyes. "Your father was a genius, Maya, but he was sentimental. He wanted to lock his discoveries away in a safety deposit box and let humanity suffer through its own self-destruction. I merely ensured his work would survive him."

Nia stirred faintly on the linoleum floor, letting out a weak, agonizing moan. Her eyes fluttered open for a split second, locking onto Maya with a look of profound, heart-wrenching apology before her eyelids drifted shut once more.

"Maya... run," Nia whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the ventilation system.

"I'm not leaving you," Maya said fiercely, dropping to her knees beside her unconscious sister, ignoring the rifles pointed at her head.

Marcus stood frozen in the corner, his braided hair matted with sweat, his face etched with utter despair. "Just take the money, Arthur," Marcus pleaded, his voice breaking. "Take the house, take everything we have left. Just let them walk away."

Sterling chuckled softly, stepping closer and raising the medical injector toward Nia's arm. "Money is an illusion, Marcus. This sequence is the future of human evolution."

Julian Vance didn't blink. With a lightning-fast movement, he reached inside his jacket, pulled out a small, metallic toggle switch, and slammed his thumb down hard against the surface.
