Chapter 8 - The Car at the Curb

Maya spun around, her eyes darting toward the dark dining room window that overlooked the quiet suburban street. Through the lace curtains, she could make out the silhouette of a sleek, black sedan parked directly beneath the streetlight, its engine running silently in the cool autumn air. No one was getting out, but the interior dome light flickered on for a split second, illuminating the pale face of a man staring directly up at their window through a pair of binoculars.
"Get away from the glass," Julian Vance said, his calm, corporate demeanor instantly vanishing, replaced by a sharp, commanding edge. He stepped briskly toward the window, pulling heavy velvet drapes across the pane with a swift yank. "They weren't supposed to be here until midnight."
Nia clutched her stomach, doubling over in a sharp gasp of pain. "My God," she whimpered, her beige satin shirt damp with cold sweat. "The cramping... it's happening again. Julian, something's wrong with the baby."
Evelyn rushed around the table, her olive-green satin blouse rustling frantically as she dropped to her knees beside Nia's chair. "Breathe, baby, just breathe," Evelyn pleaded, her hands hovering helplessly over Nia's abdomen. "Marcus, go get the emergency medical bag from the upstairs hallway closet right now!"
Marcus didn't move. He stood frozen by the fallen chair, staring at the front door as a heavy, deliberate knock echoed through the foyer. Thump. Thump. Thump. It wasn't the tentative knock of a neighbor dropping off mail. It was the rhythmic, authoritative pounding of someone who knew the locks would eventually yield if they weren't opened from the inside.
"Don't answer that," Maya hissed, grabbing Julian by the lapel of his charcoal suit. "Who is outside? If that's Dr. Sterling, what does he want now? You said everything was legal, everything was signed!"
Julian gently but firmly peeled Maya’s fingers off his jacket, straightening his tie with practiced precision. "Legal contracts apply to civil courts, Ms. Reynolds. We are no longer operating in a civil framework. Dr. Sterling's research has attracted the attention of parties who do not care about patents or gestational surrogacy agreements. They want the cellular sequence, and they will take it by any means necessary."
"You brought them here?" Marcus stammered, his voice cracking with panic as he looked at Julian. "You said this was secure! You said nobody knew where the facility was holding the primary data!"
"Data can be tracked, Mr. Davis," Julian replied coldly, pulling a heavy brass key from his pocket and sliding it into the lock of the heavy mahogany sideboard against the wall. "And so can we."
With a sharp click, the sideboard door swung open, revealing not silver tableware or liquor bottles, but a reinforced steel compartment built directly into the wall framing. Inside sat two matte-black tactical firearms and a heavy-duty encrypted satellite phone.
Maya stared at the weapons, the blood draining completely from her face. "What kind of house did you people drag me into? What was Dad really doing in that laboratory before he died?"
May you like
Julian picked up the satellite phone as it began to buzz violently with an incoming encrypted call. He pressed the receiver to his ear, listened for three seconds, and then looked directly at Maya with grim finality. "Your father wasn't working on cellular longevity, Ms. Reynolds. He was designing a biological deterrent. And your sister is currently carrying the only living sample."
