Chapter 13 - The Shattered Patio Glass

The roar of breaking glass from the rear patio drowned out the distant sirens wailing somewhere out on the main highway. Shards of heavy sliding-door glass rained across the kitchen linoleum, followed instantly by the heavy thud of tactical boots entering the house from the rear.
Julian spun around, aiming his firearm toward the kitchen threshold just as two operatives in black tactical gear burst through the swinging pantry door. Without hesitation, Julian fired twice, dropping the lead operative to one knee, but the second assailant returned fire, a volley of suppressed rounds embedding deeply into the mahogany dining table.
Wood splinters exploded into the air, showering over Maya, Nia, and Evelyn. Nia groaned softly, her body going entirely limp against the Persian rug as the stress and pain finally overwhelmed her senses.
"Nia!" Evelyn screamed, throwing herself over her unconscious daughter to protect her from the flying debris. "Help us! Someone help us, she's stopped moving!"
Marcus scrambled across the floor on his hands and knees, reaching Nia's side and pressing two shaking fingers against the side of her neck. "She has a pulse, but it's faint," Marcus shouted over the din of the gunfire, looking up at Julian with wide, panicked eyes. "We need a medic right now, or she's going into cardiac arrest!"
Julian fired his last remaining round into the kitchen hallway, the distinctive click-click of an empty chamber echoing sharply through the smoke. He tossed the useless firearm aside, pulled a heavy tactical knife from his belt sheath, and grabbed Marcus by the shoulder.
"There's an underground utility tunnel beneath the pantry floor," Julian barked over the sound of approaching boots from the front hallway. "It leads out to the drainage ditch two blocks away. Get her up!"
Maya didn't hesitate. She grabbed Nia's other arm, hauling her sister's dead weight upward with adrenaline-fueled strength. Evelyn clutched Nia's legs, and together, the three of them dragged Nia toward the darkened kitchen doorway, stepping over the shattered glass and splintered wood.
As they reached the threshold of the kitchen, a tall, imposing figure stepped out of the shadows of the pantry, blocking their only escape route. He wasn't wearing tactical gear. He wore a crisp, immaculate lab coat over a tailored charcoal suit, and in his right hand, he held a sleek, military-grade medical injector.
It was Dr. Arthur Sterling.

"End of the line, Ms. Reynolds," Sterling said, his voice smooth, clinical, and terrifyingly calm as he raised the injector toward Nia's unconscious body.
