Chapter 3 - The Forged Signature

Maya stared at the bold, sweeping signature at the bottom of the bank notice. The name printed there was Nia’s, but the handwriting was a clumsy imitation—one that Maya recognized instantly from childhood art projects. Someone had practiced Nia’s signature dozens of times until they got it right.
"What is this?" Maya whispered, the anger instantly draining from her system, replaced by a cold, numbing dread. She looked up at her sister, whose face had crumpled into an expression of pure agony. "Nia... did you sign this? Did you sign away Mom's house?"
Nia couldn't speak. She covered her face with her hands, silent sobs shaking her beige satin shoulders.
The man in the charcoal suit adjusted his cuffs, looking thoroughly detached from the emotional wreckage surrounding him. "Your sister didn't just sign the deed over, Ms. Reynolds. She sold it. Liquidated every asset tied to the family trust to cover a series of catastrophic debts incurred by our good friend Marcus here."
Evelyn stepped out from the shadows of the hallway, her gold earrings catching the light as she moved to stand beside Maya. The older woman didn't look surprised. In fact, she looked remarkably tired, as if she had been carrying this crushing secret for years.
"We tried to save it, Maya," Evelyn said softly, her voice barely above a whisper. "The business failed after Dad died. Marcus tried to keep the lights on, but the loans... they compounded."
Maya felt the floor spinning beneath her feet. She grabbed the back of a dining chair to steady herself, her dark red long-sleeve top feeling suddenly suffocating. "You knew? Mom, you knew about all of this, and you let me sit here and yell at Nia like she was hiding a simple pregnancy?"
"A pregnancy would have been a blessing," Evelyn replied, her eyes welling with tears. "What Nia is carrying isn't a child. It's an arrangement."

The stranger in the suit smiled again, reaching into his briefcase. He pulled out a thick stack of medical documents and tossed them onto the table, right on top of the dinner plates. "Allow me to introduce myself properly. My name is Julian Vance. And I am the legal representative of the fertility clinic where your sister acted as a surrogate. For your mother's debt."
