Chapter 9 - The Collapsing Bridge

Julian and Elena rushed to the wide-open doorway of the shipping container, their boots crunching on shattered glass and spent shell casings. Outside, the rain was coming down in sheets, transforming Pier 42 into a watery wasteland. Fifty yards away, the access bridge—the only paved roadway connecting the industrial pier to the mainland—erupted in a ball of orange fire and twisted steel. The central span dropped heavily into the dark, churning waters of the harbor, cutting off all escape.

"They're sealing us in," Elena said, her rifle raised as she scanned the shadowed cranes and stacked cargo containers lining the pier. "Viktor’s men aren't just cleaning up loose ends. They want this entire dock erased."

"Clara must have triggered the secondary charges on her way out," Julian said, his jaw tightening as he clutched the waterproof pouch of bearer bonds. The twelve million dollars felt like a lead weight in his hands. "She’s burning the evidence, and we're the primary collateral."

Lily stood in the doorway beside them, entirely unfazed by the burning bridge. She reached into her pocket, pulled out a small, highly modified electronic tablet, and began tapping rapidly on the screen.

"The bridge is out, but the subterranean utility maintenance tunnel is fifty feet to our left," Lily said casually, not looking up from her device. "It leads straight to the old subway line. But it's flooded, and the security gate is locked with a biometric deadbolt."

Elena looked down at the six-year-old girl, a mixture of disbelief and profound suspicion crossing her features. "Who are you, really, Lily? No ordinary six-year-old carries decryption tools and memorizes municipal infrastructure blueprints."

Lily finally looked up, her light brown hair falling slightly across her forehead as she gave Elena a deadpan stare. "I'm the person making sure you don't die in a burning shipping container on your wedding night. You're welcome, by the way."

Julian let out a short, humorless laugh, grabbing Elena by the elbow. "She’s right. We don't have time for a background check. If we stay here, Clara's cleanup crew will turn this container into our tomb."

"Move!" Elena commanded, taking the point position with her rifle raised as they dashed out from the smoking container into the freezing, torrential rain.

The wind whipped their clothes, Julian's ruined tuxedo clinging to his frame like a second skin. They sprinted across the slippery concrete toward a rusted metal hatch set into the asphalt, the distant sound of approaching sirens—or perhaps something worse—echoing across the dark harbor.
