Chapter 8 - Smoke and Shadows

The acrid white smoke burned the back of Julian’s throat, causing him to cough violently as he strained against the wall-mounted shackles. Through the dense haze, the sharp pop-pop-pop of suppressed gunfire echoed inside the container, mixing with the heavy thud of bodies hitting the concrete floor.
"Elena!" Julian yelled, his voice cracking through the smoke. "Elena, where are you?"
"Shut up!" a voice hissed right beside his ear. A pair of cold, capable hands grabbed his wrists, and a heavy industrial wire cutter snapped through the steel cuffs with a sharp clack.
The smoke cleared just enough for Julian to see Lily standing there, holding a pair of heavy-duty bolt cutters that dwarfed her small frame. She tossed the heavy tools aside with a casual clatter.
"You really need to pick better hiding spots for your master keys, Julian," Lily said, wiping a smudge of soot from her cheek.
Julian rubbed his raw, bleeding wrists, his dark eyes darting around the chaotic interior of the container. Director Clara Vance was nowhere to be seen. On the floor near the metal table lay Miller, unconscious or dead, a spreading dark stain soaking into the concrete beneath his tactical vest. Ten feet away, Elena was crouched behind a steel drum, her tactical rifle raised as she scanned the smoking hole in the roof.
"Clara’s gone," Elena called out, her breathing ragged. "She took the escape hatch beneath the floorboards."
Julian lunged forward, grabbing the battered stuffed bear Lily had dropped during the explosion. He ripped open the poorly stitched seam along the bear’s back, plunging his fingers deep into the synthetic stuffing until his knuckles brushed against a cold, waterproof plastic pouch. He pulled it out—a heavy, sealed bundle of twelve million dollars in unregistered bearer bonds.
"You found them," Elena murmured, walking over through the smoke, her dark eyes searching Julian’s face. The tension between them was electric, a volatile mix of betrayal and unresolved affection.
"I told you," Julian said softly, holding the pouch against his chest. "I didn't steal them for myself. I stole them to buy us a way out of this life."
May you like
"A way out?" Lily interrupted, stepping between them with a skeptical look. She pointed a small finger toward the open container door. "You might want to look outside before you talk about vacations. Viktor’s cleaning crew just blew up the bridge."
