Chapter 3 - The Empty Safe House

The unmarked black SUV cut through the heavy midnight fog rolling off the harbor, its tires hissing against the damp asphalt. In the backseat, Julian sat flanked by two federal agents, his wrists cuffed securely to a heavy iron belt loop. The black tuxedo felt restrictive now, a costume from a play that had abruptly turned into a nightmare. Across from him, Agent Miller stared down at a glowing tablet displaying high-resolution photographs of a ransacked Swiss chalet.
"You've been very quiet, Mr. Vance," Miller said, his voice level and devoid of any emotion. "Usually, suspects caught with twelve-million-dollar stolen bearer bonds try to bargain within the first ten minutes."
"I have nothing to say to a man who doesn't understand the difference between possession and entrapment," Julian replied coldly, staring out the rain-streaked window at the blurring neon lights of the city.
"Right. Entrapment," Miller murmured, swiping to a new photo on the screen. "Is that what you call leaving your fingerprints all over the Zurich safe house security keypad three days before your wedding?"
Julian didn't blink. He knew the safe house in Zurich. He knew every floorboard, every hidden compartment in the mahogany wainscoting, and the exact weight of the bearer bonds resting inside the floor safe. What he didn't know—what was gnawing at the very edge of his sanity—was how federal authorities had connected his biometric data to a location he had entered using a dead man's security pass.
The vehicle slowed, turning sharply down a narrow access road flanked by rusted chain-link fencing. They were heading toward the old shipping yards on Pier 42, a derelict industrial zone slated for demolition.
"We aren't taking you to the precinct, Julian," Miller said quietly, closing the tablet. "The Director wants a word before the paperwork hits the public desk."
"The Director doesn't care about a domestic asset recovery," Julian countered, his mind racing through escape probabilities. "This is about Viktor, isn't it? My uncle is playing a deeper game."
May you like
"Your uncle Viktor was found dead in a drainage ditch outside Geneva twenty-four hours ago," Miller stated flatly, watching Julian’s reaction with hawk-like intensity. "And you were the last beneficiary listed on his encrypted offshore account."
