Chapter 5 - The Wedding Dress Confession

The bridal suite at the Grand Azure Hotel smelled faintly of spilled champagne and expensive white lilies. Elena stood before the gilded floor-length mirror, her fingers trembling as she unzipped the plunging neckline of her pristine white wedding dress. The heavy silk fell to the floor in a pale pool around her satin shoes. Beneath the gown, she wore a simple, dark tactical harness fitted with a secure leather holster—and a radio receiver glowing with a steady blue light.

The heavy oak door clicked open, and Elena didn't even turn around. She knew the measured, silent footsteps of the person entering the room.

"It's done," Elena said quietly, her voice devoid of the bubbly excitement she had feigned under the chandelier earlier that evening.

"You played your part exceptionally well, agent," Director Vance said, stepping into the warm light of the suite. She walked over to the vanity table, picked up the blue velvet ring box, and lifted the diamond ring to examine it under the lamp. "Though I admit, I didn't expect the flower girl to improvise with the candy bar."

"Lily is thorough," Elena replied, unbuckling the tactical harness and tossing it onto the velvet sofa. "She memorized the target profile before we even infiltrated the catering staff. But tell me the truth—did Julian know I was an operative all along?"

Director Vance set the ring box down with a sharp click. "Of course he didn't. If he had known, he never would have proposed. Men like Julian only fall for women they think they can control or protect. You were his blind spot."

Elena walked over to the window, staring out at the rain-slicked city streets below where the unmarked federal SUV had vanished into the night. Her heart was beating a frantic rhythm against her ribs, a lingering echo of the genuine terror she had felt when Julian looked into her eyes at the altar. Despite the training, despite the cold calculus of the agency, a strange, hollow ache lingered in her chest.

"He loved me," Elena murmured, almost to herself. "In his own twisted, criminal way, the wedding was real to him."

"Criminals don't get happy endings, Elena," Director Vance said sharply, walking toward the door. "They get trials, asset forfeitures, and long, quiet sentences."

The door swung shut behind the Director, leaving Elena alone in the quiet suite. She reached into the pocket of her discarded dress and pulled out a small, folded piece of paper Julian had slipped into her hand during the ceremony, right before Lily interrupted them with the candy bar.

Elena unfolded it with trembling fingers. Inside was a single sentence written in Julian's precise handwriting: The real bearer bonds are sewn into the lining of the flower girl's dress.
