Chapter 4 - The Abandoned Pier

The damp air of Pier 42 tasted of salt, rust, and rotting timber. The federal SUV rolled to a halt beside a towering, skeletal crane that groaned under the weight of the coastal wind. Agent Miller shoved the rear door open, grabbing Julian by the upper arm and hauling him out onto the cracked concrete. The heavy cuffs bit deep into Julian’s wrists as the freezing mist coated the lapels of his ruined tuxedo.
"Move," Miller ordered, shoving Julian toward a dilapidated shipping container painted a faded maritime blue.
Instead of an interrogation room or a standard holding cell, the heavy metal door of the container was pushed ajar, spilling a harsh, sterile wedge of fluorescent light onto the ground. Standing inside, leaning against a folding metal table covered in technical schematics, was a woman in a sharp trench coat. She turned around slowly, her silver-streaked hair pulled back into a severe bun.
"Welcome home, Julian," Director Vance said, her voice carrying a chillingly familiar cadence.
Julian stopped dead in his tracks, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle ticked in his cheek. "You're supposed to be in Washington, managing the Oversight Committee."
"And you were supposed to liquidate the Zurich portfolio and meet me in Lisbon," Director Vance replied, stepping closer. The resemblance was undeniable; she shared the same piercing dark eyes and sharp jawline as Julian—and the late, unlamented Viktor. "Instead, you decided to play dress-up, marry an innocent woman, and hand out multi-million dollar diamonds under a crystal chandelier like a cheap carnival act."
"I wanted out," Julian said through gritted teeth, struggling against the restraint of the handcuffs. "The syndicate is finished, and you know it. Interpol has the entire ledger."
"Interpol has what we wanted them to have," Director Vance corrected smoothly, tapping a finger against the schematics on the table. "Which brings us to the real problem. You didn't just steal the bearer bonds from Viktor. You left something behind in that safe house. Something that proves the entire federal seizure operation was an inside job orchestrated by your own flesh and blood."
Julian let out a sharp, dark laugh. "You think I'm the only one with leverage? If I go down, the encryption keys to the main server go public."
Director Vance smiled, a cold, humorless expression that didn't reach her eyes. She pulled a small, silver flash drive from her pocket and tossed it onto the metal table.

"You assume we need your keys, Julian," she whispered softly. "Elena found the backup drive in your tuxedo pocket three hours ago."
