Chapter 13 - The Train Out of Hell

The blinding headlight of the oncoming locomotive cut through the underground darkness, casting long, frantic shadows against the curved brick walls of the abandoned subway station. The heavy diesel engine roared like a caged beast, its metal wheels screeching against the rusted rails as it accelerated straight toward them.

"Get in!" Lily shouted from the open doorway of the driver's cabin, her small hands already throwing the heavy mechanical levers forward on the vintage control console.

Julian practically threw Elena into the narrow cabin before scrambling inside himself, slamming the metal door shut just as a hail of gunfire pinged off the exterior plating. Bullets sparked against the steel frame, leaving shallow dents in the aged metal.

The stalled train car beneath them shuddered violently as Lily engaged the pneumatic starters. With a loud, grinding groan of long-dormant gears, the vintage transit car jerked forward, inching away from the platform just as a heavily armored tactical rail-car rounded the curve, slamming to a halt where they had been standing a second before.

"Hold on!" Lily yelled, shoving the throttle all the way forward.

The old subway car lurched violently, throwing Julian and Elena against the interior bulkhead. The wheels found their groove on the tracks, and the train surged forward into the dark, winding tunnel, accelerating rapidly as they left the pursuing mercenaries behind in a cloud of exhaust and sparks.

Inside the cramped cabin, the amber glow of the control panel illuminated the small space. Elena slid down to the floor, resting her back against the metal wall, her breath coming in ragged, uneven gasps. She laid her rifle across her knees and stared at Julian, who stood beside Lily, watching the dark tunnel walls blur past outside the cracked windshield.

"You really had this planned from the beginning, didn't you?" Elena asked, her voice quiet, carrying a strange mix of exhaustion and grudging respect.

Julian turned to look at her, the harsh shadows of the dashboard softening across his face. "Not all of it, Elena. I planned the escape from the syndicate. I planned the bearer bonds. But I didn't plan for you. And I certainly didn't plan for a six-year-old hacker to hijack our getaway train."

Lily didn't look back from the controls, her eyes fixed on the winding tracks ahead. "You also didn't plan for the Federal Reserve to freeze the offshore accounts thirty minutes ago. The bearer bonds are worthless digital paper now anyway."

Julian froze, his hand dropping from the waterproof pouch. "What did you say?"

"I said the money is gone," Lily repeated calmly, easing back on the throttle as the red warning lights of the central station flickered into view ahead. "Clara didn't just want the bonds. She wanted the encryption keys to transfer the reserve funds directly to her personal Swiss trust. Which she just did. And we recorded the transaction."

Elena stood up slowly, a sharp, dangerous smile finally touching the corners of her mouth. "Which means we don't need the bonds anymore. We have a signed confession and a complete financial trail."

Before Julian could answer, the train slammed to a sudden, jarring halt inside a darkened, subterranean depot, the emergency brakes hissing loudly as the doors slid open to reveal a single figure waiting on the platform.
