Chapter 7 - Breach at the Pier

The heavy steel door of the shipping container groaned and swung inward, slamming against the rusted wall with a deafening crash. A tall figure stepped through the smoky threshold, holding a suppressed tactical rifle in a low, ready position. The wet hood of a heavy black raincoat fell back, revealing Elena’s face, pale and rain-streaked, her dark hair plastered to her temples. In her left hand, she clutched a battered, gray-toned stuffed bear with one missing button eye.

Director Clara Vance drew her sidearm with blinding speed, leveling the barrel straight at Elena’s chest. "Drop the weapon, agent. Or the bride becomes a casualty of internal affairs."

Elena didn't blink. She didn't drop her rifle. Instead, she raised the barrel just a fraction higher, training the red laser sight squarely between Clara’s eyes.

"The operation is compromised, Clara," Elena said, her voice steady and echoing off the metal walls. "The perimeter is locked down by Interpol. Your resignation letter was transmitted to the Attorney General's office five minutes ago."

Clara’s finger tightened slightly on the trigger of her Glock, the tension in the room snapping taut like a violin string. "You think a digital file can save you? I built this network before you were even out of primary school."

"You built a house of cards," Julian shouted from his shackles against the back wall, straining against the iron ring. "She didn't come here to arrest you, Clara. She came to finish the audit."

Lily calmly climbed back onto her folding chair, picked up her remaining piece of chocolate, and watched the standoff unfold with the detached interest of someone watching a movie. "You're both standing in the kill zone," the little girl remarked quietly, nibbling on the corner of the candy bar. "The tactical team outside isn't Interpol. They're Viktor’s cleaning crew."

Before Clara or Elena could process the warning, a deafening explosion ripped through the roof of the shipping container. A shower of sparks, glowing embers, and twisted corrugated metal rained down around them as a smoke grenade bounced across the concrete floor, filling the enclosure with a thick, acrid white fog that blinded everyone instantly.
