Chapter 12 - The Subway Collapse

The subterranean rumble swelled into a deafening roar as the weight of the city above shifted. With a tremendous crash of snapping iron and collapsing masonry, a massive section of the old subway tunnel roof caved in directly behind Clara’s tactical team, plunging tons of dirt, asphalt, and twisted rail ties into the corridor.

"Fall back!" Clara screamed, her composure finally shattering as dust and smoke filled the tunnel, blinding the mercenaries and sending them scrambling in panic.

"Now!" Elena yelled, grabbing Julian’s arm and hauling him forward through the swirling chaos.

They sprinted past the stumbling guards, splashing through the knee-deep water as chunks of concrete rained down around them. Lily stayed right at their heels, her small form dodging falling debris with impossible precision. They burst through the secondary security gate just as a massive slab of concrete sealed the primary corridor behind them, cutting off Clara and her team in a cloud of gray dust.

They emerged into the vast, cavernous expanse of an abandoned underground subway station. The air here was dry, smelling of ancient coal smoke and iron dust. A rusted, graffiti-covered train car sat stalled on the tracks, its doors blown wide open.

Julian collapsed against the side of the train car, gasping for breath, the waterproof pouch of bearer bonds still clutched tightly in his hand. He looked down at Elena, who was reloading her rifle with steady, practiced movements.

"That was entirely too close," Julian panted, wiping sweat and soot from his forehead.

"We aren't safe yet," Elena said, her dark eyes scanning the dark, curving railway tunnels stretching out into the gloom. "Clara knows this infrastructure better than we do. She'll be waiting at the transfer station downtown."

"Then we don't go downtown," Lily said, climbing agilely onto the rusted platform of the train car and pulling open the driver's cabin door.

Julian stared at the child, incredulity finally breaking through his exhaustion. "Don't tell me you know how to operate a vintage 1990s municipal transit train, Lily."

"My grandfather taught me before he went into witness protection," Lily said, flipping a series of heavy brass switches on the control panel until the dashboard flickered to life with a faint, amber glow. "And unlike your uncle Viktor, my grandfather actually knew how to build an escape route that didn't end in a grave."

Before Julian or Elena could question her further, the far end of the tunnel illuminated in a blinding sweep of white light. A heavy diesel engine roared to life in the distance, its horn blaring a deafening warning as it barreled straight toward them down the tracks.
