Chapter 9 - The Surveillance Drone

The mechanical hum of the drone filled the quiet night air, its tiny red recording light blinking rhythmically like a predatory eye. Zora froze, her hand hovering just inches from the hovering device. Across the street, the deep shadows of the alleyway swallowed Marcus as he gave chase to the fleeing figure of Arthur Sterling, leaving Zora and Maya completely isolated amid the flashing police lights of the main avenue.
Maya slowly stood up from the velvet ottoman, her face drained of all color as she stared at the drone. "What is that? Is it filming us?"
"It's not just filming us," Zora said, her voice deadpan as she recognized the corporate logo stenciled in matte black on the drone's carbon-fiber chassis. It was the private security logo of Sterling Enterprises—the very company her father had spent the last decade trying to dismantle in civil court. "It’s a live broadcast feed."
Suddenly, the drone's built-in speaker crackled to life, emitting a burst of static before a smooth, chillingly familiar voice echoed across the empty pavement.
"Good evening, young ladies," Arthur Sterling's voice rang out from the tiny speaker, perfectly clear and dripping with mocking amusement. "I hope you're enjoying the family reunion. Tell your father that the game of real estate monopoly he started ten years ago is finally reaching its final round. And Zora... congratulations on your graduation. It would be a shame if you couldn't attend because your father's remaining assets are seized by midnight."
Before Zora could grab a heavy book or a nearby stanchion to swat the drone out of the air, it accelerated vertically with a sharp whine, shooting straight up into the night sky toward a sleek black helicopter hovering silently above the cloud cover.
Maya collapsed back onto the ottoman, burying her face in her hands as genuine, ragged sobs finally wracked her frame. "We're ruined," she cried out, the smug defiance completely gone. "Mom is arrested, Dad is chasing ghosts, and we don't even have a home to go back to."
Zora didn't offer comforting words, nor did she gloat. She walked over to the champagne silk graduation dress, gently unpinning it from the mannequin. She slipped it over her arm, the heavy crystal beads catching the red and blue flashing lights of a returning police cruiser.
"We aren't ruined yet, Maya," Zora said, her voice carrying a steely resolve that surprised even herself. "But if we want to survive what's coming, we have to stop fighting each other and figure out what Sterling is hiding in the downtown office."
Just as Zora finished speaking, the front door of the boutique opened, and Officer Ramos stepped back inside, looking grave. He wasn't alone; he was accompanied by a federal agent holding a thick stack of federal seizure warrants bearing Marcus Coleman's name.

"Miss Coleman," the federal agent said, stepping directly toward Zora. "I need you to come with us downtown immediately. Your father has just been detained."
