Chapter 12 - The Secret Partner

The heavy door swung open to reveal an empty, brightly lit hallway echoing with the distant sound of rushing boots as federal guards responded to the breach downstairs. Agent Vance didn't hesitate; he bolted out of the room, shouting orders into his shoulder radio, leaving Zora and Maya standing alone in the sterile interrogation room.

"We need to get downstairs," Zora said immediately, carefully laying the champagne silk graduation dress across the metal chair.

Maya looked at her sister in disbelief, wiping her damp cheeks with the sleeve of her grey patterned dress. "Are you insane? The feds are swarming the building, Mom is locked up, Dad is detained, and some crazy old boutique owner just stole the evidence. We need to run away, not investigate!"

"If we run, we lose everything," Zora replied, her voice leaving no room for argument. "Mr. Henderson wasn't just a boutique owner. He was the silent partner in my father's real estate firm ten years ago before they had a falling out. He's the one who set this entire trap."

Zora didn't wait for Maya to agree. She stepped out into the corridor and started running toward the central staircase, her braided dark hair bouncing behind her. Reluctantly, Maya scrambled to her feet and chased after her, their footsteps echoing off the concrete floors.

They reached the lower level just as the heavy steel doors of the evidence vault stood wide open. Inside, the room was a disaster; files were strewn across the floor, and the metal storage bins hung open. Agent Vance and three armed guards were standing near the center of the room, staring at a laptop left plugged into the vault's central terminal.

As Zora and Maya slipped past the security tape, Agent Vance turned around, his expression grim. He pointed the screen of the laptop toward them.

"Your friend Mr. Henderson didn't just steal the evidence," Agent Vance said coldly. "He just uploaded a public confession to the federal registry database."

Zora stepped forward and looked at the laptop screen. A digital audio file was playing, featuring a crystal-clear recording of Arthur Sterling and Mr. Henderson speaking in a private office.

“Once we frame Marcus for the embezzlement and force his wife to sign over the trust funds, the entire commercial district is ours,” Mr. Henderson’s voice echoed clearly from the speakers. “His daughters will be left with nothing, and our real estate monopoly will be complete.”

Maya’s knees buckled, and she caught herself against a metal filing cabinet, staring at the screen in horror. "He... he framed our whole family. We were just pawns in a corporate war."

"And the war isn't over yet," a calm, familiar voice spoke from the shadows of the vault's back corner.

They all whipped around. Standing near the damaged exit was Mr. Henderson himself, holding the secure hard drive in one hand and a small silver detonator in the other.
