Chapter 7 - The Shards of Glass

The deafening crash of breaking glass sent shockwaves through the boutique. Zora screamed, instinctively ducking behind the mahogany desk as a shower of glittering crystal fragments rained down across the polished hardwood floors. Officer Ramos instantly unholstered his firearm, sweeping the perimeter with practiced tactical precision while shouting for everyone to get down.

In the center of the showroom, smoke billowed from a small, smoking device that had been thrown through the front window. It wasn't an explosive, but a heavy paving stone wrapped in a dark cloth, with a sealed brown envelope taped securely to its surface.

Marcus vaulted over the desk, ignoring Evelyn’s frantic warnings, and sprinted toward the stone. His dark purple dress shirt was stained with sweat as he tore the brown envelope free from the cloth and ripped it open. Inside was a single laminated photograph showing a sprawling coastal villa in the Cayman Islands—and right beside it, a certified deed bearing Evelyn Coleman’s signature as sole primary beneficiary.

"Evelyn," Marcus said, his voice trembling with a fury so intense it terrified even the police officer. He slowly turned around, holding the photograph up for her to see. "Care to explain why you own a multi-million-dollar estate in the Caymans that I never knew existed?"

Evelyn backed away until she hit the mirrored wall of the boutique, her breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps. Her beige wrap dress was dusted with glass fragments, her carefully styled hair coming undone.

"I had to secure my future, Marcus!" Evelyn finally shrieked, the mask of calm sophistication shattering entirely. "You were going to liquidate everything for your new commercial development project! If that deal went south, we would have been left with nothing. I used Maya's ambition to get the trust transfer approved, yes! But I did it to protect this family!"

Maya stood frozen in the corner, her mouth hanging open as she stared at her mother in sheer horror. "You... you used me? You knew the bank forms were part of your scheme, and you let me take the fall?"

"Shut up, Maya!" Evelyn snapped, her maternal facade completely evaporated. "If you had half your sister's brains, you would have realized that loyalty to this family means securing the assets by any means necessary!"

Zora stepped out from behind the desk, her white button-down shirt smudged with dust, her eyes burning with a mixture of betrayal and profound clarity. The ruined graduation dress, the stolen college fund, the offshore accounts, the forged signatures—it all clicked into place as a horrifying portrait of greed and manipulation that she had been blind to her entire life.

"You didn't care about my graduation," Zora said, her voice eerily quiet as she looked at her mother. "You didn't care about Maya's future either. We were just pawns in your financial escape plan."

Officer Ramos stepped forward, snapping the metal handcuffs onto Evelyn’s wrists with a sharp, metallic click. "Evelyn Coleman, you are under arrest for wire fraud, identity theft, and money laundering. You have the right to remain silent..."

As the officer led Evelyn toward the shattered front entrance past the smoking paving stone, her final parting glare wasn't directed at Marcus, nor at Zora, but straight at the shadows lurking outside the broken storefront window.
