Chapter 2 - The Open Road

The hum of the sedan's engine was the only sound filling the cabin as they drove down the interstate toward the city's premier boutique district. In the back seat, the atmosphere was thick enough to cut with a knife. Maya sat huddled against the door, her arms locked tightly across her chest, staring fixedly out the window at the blurred asphalt. Zora sat on the opposite side, wiping the last traces of salt from her cheeks with the cuff of her white button-down shirt. The shock of the ruined dress had settled into a dull, throbbing ache in her chest, but a new, heavier tension hung in the air regarding their father's unprecedented reaction.

Marcus drove with both hands gripping the steering wheel at ten and two, his eyes locked straight ahead on the road. In the passenger seat, Evelyn was staring down at her lap, her fingers digging into the fabric of her beige wrap dress. She hadn't spoken a single word since they left the driveway. The destruction of her designer handbag had clearly shattered her sense of domestic equilibrium, yet her silence felt more calculated than remorseful. She glanced sideways at Marcus, her jaw tightening as she prepared to break the agonizing quiet.

"Marcus, driving us into the city at this hour makes no sense," Evelyn finally spoke, her voice laced with a tense, defensive sharpness. "The boutiques close in forty minutes. You destroyed my anniversary gift over a childish sibling rivalry, and now you are dragging us all out like some kind of tyrant."

Marcus didn't turn his head, his voice remaining terrifyingly level. "I didn't destroy a gift, Evelyn. I taught a lesson about consequences. For too long, you’ve watched Maya tear down her sister while you sat back and pretended not to notice. That stops tonight."

Maya scoffed from the back seat, unable to keep her poisonous tongue still any longer. "Dad, you are acting insane! Zora is playing the victim just like she always does. She buys things she doesn't deserve and expects the world to applaud her. Why should she get a custom dress when she didn't even earn the scholarship honestly?"

Zora whipped her head around, her eyes widening in disbelief at the sheer audacity of the accusation. "What are you talking about? I earned every single point of that GPA! I studied until my eyes bled while you were out partying!"

"Enough!" Marcus slammed his palm against the steering wheel, the sharp crack making everyone jump. "No more accusations, no more lies. We are walking into that store, Zora is picking whatever she wants, and Maya is going to watch her wear it. Is that understood?"

They pulled into the glittering parking lot of downtown's most exclusive atelier, the neon sign of the bridal and formal wear boutique casting a cold white light across the car's windshield. Marcus killed the engine and unbuckled his seatbelt. As he opened his door, a sleek black town car pulled up directly beside them, and a man neither Zora nor Maya recognized stepped out from the driver's seat, holding a plain manila envelope with Marcus's name written across the front in heavy black ink.
