Chapter 5 - The Uniformed Intruder

The crisp blue uniform of the city police officer seemed to instantly suck all the oxygen out of the boutique office. Officer Ramos stepped into the room, his hand resting casually near his duty belt as he scanned the tense group. His eyes lingered for a moment on Zora’s tear-stained face before shifting directly to Marcus, who nodded grimly in acknowledgment.
"Good evening, Mr. Coleman," Officer Ramos said, his voice professional and measured. "I received your digital dispatch regarding a suspected wire fraud and forgery incident involving the family trust account."
Evelyn instantly stepped in front of Maya, throwing her arms out defensively as if shielding her from physical violence. Her beige wrap dress billowed slightly with the sudden movement.
"Officer, there has been a terrible misunderstanding," Evelyn said, her voice dripping with frantic urgency. "This is a private family matter. My husband is simply overreacting to a sibling rivalry. No laws were broken; it was just an impulsive financial reallocation by a teenager who made a mistake."
"A mistake, Mother?" Zora’s voice cut through the room like a scalpel. She stepped forward, her eyes flashing with a sudden, righteous fury. "She stole thirty thousand dollars of my tuition money. She forged signatures, lied to the bank, and destroyed the only physical symbol of my hard work. That isn't a mistake. That’s a crime."
Maya glared at Zora from behind their mother, her expression twisting into pure venom. "Shut up, you self-righteous little hypocrite! You always act like the martyr, but you’re just as manipulative as everyone else. You knew Dad was going to pay for everything, so you played the victim to get extra sympathy!"
"That is enough!" Marcus’s roar shook the framed fashion sketches hanging on the office walls. He looked directly at Officer Ramos. "The evidence is on the screen, Officer. The bank records, the security footage, and the forged authorization forms. I want a formal report filed."
Officer Ramos stepped closer to the mahogany desk, glancing at the surveillance still on the monitor and the physical documents Mr. Henderson had laid out. He pulled a small notebook from his pocket and clicked his pen.
"Mr. Coleman, under state law, intra-family financial crimes involving minors or legal dependents require a formal deposition before an arrest can be executed," Officer Ramos explained calmly. "However, given the amount and the clear evidence of forgery, this case will be forwarded to the district attorney’s office by tomorrow morning. Miss Maya Coleman cannot leave the state."
Maya let out a sharp gasp, her smug composure completely shattering. "You can't do this! I'm seventeen! I have my whole life ahead of me! You're going to ruin my future over some stupid money?"
"You ruined your own future the moment you decided to steal from your sister," Marcus said, his face completely expressionless. He turned to Mr. Henderson. "Thank you for your help tonight, Arthur. Let's look at that replacement dress for Zora. We aren't leaving this store empty-handed."
Mr. Henderson nodded sympathetically and unlocked a floor-to-ceiling glass display case at the back of the office, sliding it open to reveal a breathtaking, cascading gown made of champagne silk and hand-sewn crystal beads that caught the light like liquid diamonds.

As Zora stepped toward the gown, mesmerized by its beauty, Evelyn’s phone buzzed violently in her purse. She pulled it out, glanced at the glowing screen, and her face turned the color of chalk as she read an incoming text message from an unknown number.
