Chapter 13 - The Ultimatum

The cold, metallic click of the detonator in Mr. Henderson's hand froze everyone in the room. Agent Vance slowly lowered his weapon, his eyes locked on the elderly man who stood casually among the fallen files as if he were simply browsing merchandise in his boutique.

"Mr. Henderson, drop the device," Agent Vance commanded, his voice steady but tense. "You're surrounded. The entire federal building is locked down."

Mr. Henderson let out a soft, dry chuckle, his bespoke suit looking impeccably pressed under the harsh fluorescent lights. "Agent Vance, please. Do you really think I walked into a federal facility without a contingency plan? This hard drive contains not just Marcus Coleman's files, but the encrypted financial records of every judge, prosecutor, and senator who helped cover up the original embezzlement scheme ten years ago."

Marcus stumbled into the vault from the adjacent hallway, escorted by two guards who had just released him from holding. His dark purple dress shirt was wrinkled, and his face was pale, but his eyes blazed with intense fury the moment he saw his former business partner.

"Arthur," Marcus snarled, taking a step forward. "It was you all along. You ruined my family, you manipulated my wife, and you used my daughters to cover your tracks."

"I merely exposed the house of cards you built on sand, Marcus," Mr. Henderson replied smoothly, not flinching an inch. "You thought you could cut me out of the downtown development deal a decade ago and walk away clean? I've been waiting ten years for this exact moment."

Zora stepped past her father, her heart pounding against her ribs. She looked directly at Mr. Henderson, her voice completely devoid of fear. "You think you won because you have the hard drive and the files? You underestimated something fundamental."

Mr. Henderson raised an eyebrow, genuinely amused. "And what is that, young lady?"

"You didn't count on us stopping the broadcast before it reached the public database," Zora said steadily. She raised her smartphone, the screen glowing brightly to reveal a live dashboard showing that the federal registry had blocked the upload due to an integrity checksum failure initiated by her own backup script from the library job.

Mr. Henderson's confident smile faltered for a fraction of a second—a micro-expression of pure panic that he quickly tried to mask. He looked down at his laptop terminal, frantically tapping the keyboard.

"You little..." Mrion Henderson hissed, his finger hovering over the detonator button. "If I push this, the physical backups in the offsite server farm go up in smoke along with your father's freedom."

Before he could depress the button, Maya sprinted across the room with a burst of sudden, desperate speed, diving directly into Mr. Henderson's knees and tackling him hard to the polished concrete floor.
