Chapter 1 - The First Cut

The sound of steel biting through delicate tulle was a sharp, wicked snap that echoed off the bedroom walls. Maya stood frozen, her dark curly hair framing a face twisted into a smug, triumphant smirk. In her hands, she held the tailor’s shears, their blades still glistening from the metallic threads of the heavily beaded, sparkling beige graduation dress she had just butchered. The intricate embroidery, a labor of love that had cost months of sleepless nights, lay in jagged, pathetic ruins across the mattress.
Zora burst through the doorway, her braided dark hair swinging violently as her chest heaved with ragged breaths. She stared at the devastation, her white button-down shirt feeling suddenly too tight against her racing heart.
"What did you do?" Zora whispered, her voice trembling with a quiet, devastating horror that refused to turn into a scream.
Maya didn't flinch. She just adjusted the grip on her grey patterned sheer long-sleeve dress and tilted her chin upward.
"I fixed your delusion," Maya said smoothly, her tone dripping with casual cruelty. "You really thought a girl like you was going to walk across that stage wearing custom couture? Dad bought that fabric for the family, not for your solo act."
Tears hot and blinding finally broke over Zora’s lower lashes, streaming down her cheeks as she looked closer at the shredded fabric on the bed.
"I saved for months for this," Zora choked out, the words tasting like ash in her mouth. "Every single dollar from the library job. Every birthday envelope."
Footsteps approached from the hallway, heavy and measured. Their mother, Evelyn, appeared in the doorway, her beige wrap dress perfectly pressed, her expression carved from stone. She looked past Zora at the ruined dress, then cast a cold, dismissive glance at Zora’s tear-streaked face while Maya stood by with folded arms, playing the victim with practiced ease.
"Stop being dramatic, it's only a dress," Evelyn said flatly, her voice entirely devoid of maternal warmth. "You are making a scene over threads. Maya was just trying to help you keep your priorities straight. Your sister knows how things work around here."
Before Zora could formulate a reply to the staggering betrayal, a tall, imposing shadow fell across the threshold. Their father, Marcus, stepped into the room. His dark purple dress shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, and his beard framed a jaw clenched so tight a muscle ticked violently. In his right hand, he held a luxury leather designer handbag that Evelyn had prized above all else, and in his left hand, the very same pair of shears Maya had used moments before.
Without a single word of warning, Marcus raised the scissors. With cold, mechanical precision, he drove the blades straight through the supple leather of the designer bag, slicing it cleanly in half. Evelyn gasped, her hands flying to her mouth in absolute horror as she watched her status symbol fall apart.
Marcus lowered the ruined bag and fixed his piercing gaze directly on Maya, whose smug smile instantly vanished, replaced by a look of sheer, unadulterated terror.
"Pack your stuff, both of you," Marcus said, his voice dropping an octave into a dangerous register. "We're buying your graduation dress first."

The silence that followed was suffocating, broken only by the soft thud of the ruined handbag sliding off the bed and hitting the hardwood floor.
