Chapter 6 - The Anonymous Text

The glow from Evelyn’s phone illuminated her wide, terrified eyes in the dimly lit back office. She dropped her hand to her side as if the device had suddenly become burning hot, her breath catching in her throat. Marcus noticed the shift in her demeanor immediately, his sharp eyes narrowing as he stepped away from the display case where Zora was gently touching the hem of the champagne silk gown.

"What is it, Evelyn?" Marcus asked, his voice low and dangerous. "Another message from whoever helped Maya launder the trust funds?"

Evelyn swallowed hard, desperately trying to regain her composure. She forced a stiff, unconvincing smile and slipped the phone back into her beige wrap dress pocket.

"It's nothing, Marcus," she lied, her voice pitching slightly higher than normal. "Just a telemarketer. Let's just focus on getting Zora's dress sorted out so we can go home. This entire spectacle has gone on long enough."

"Show me the phone," Marcus demanded, stepping directly into her path. He didn't raise his voice, but the absolute authority in his tone left no room for argument.

"I said it's nothing!" Evelyn snapped, her facade cracking as she tried to sidestep him.

Before she could move, Officer Ramos stepped forward, blocking the doorway. "Ma'am, given that an active financial investigation is underway, any incoming communications related to the trust fund or involved parties must be logged as potential evidence. Hand over the device, please."

Trapped between a police officer and her formidable husband, Evelyn's resistance melted into bitter defeat. With trembling fingers, she pulled the phone from her pocket and handed it over to Marcus.

Marcus pressed the screen, unlocked it using her face ID, and opened the messaging app. The most recent text message, received mere seconds ago, was displayed in bright white letters against a black background: The audit is just the beginning. If Maya goes down for the bank run, the offshore property deeds in your name go public next.

Marcus stared at the screen, the blood draining completely from his face. He slowly lowered the phone and turned his gaze from Evelyn to Mr. Henderson, whose polite expression had suddenly shifted into something cold and knowing.

"You knew about this," Marcus said, his voice barely a whisper. He looked at the elderly boutique owner. "The offshore accounts. That's why you had the security footage ready before I even arrived."

Mr. Henderson didn't flinch. He slowly folded his hands over the mahogany desk and leaned forward.

"Marcus, you spent twenty years building a real estate empire on the backs of silent partners," Mr. Henderson said smoothly, his voice carrying an eerie calm. "You didn't think those partners would protect your family forever, did you? The trust fund wasn't stolen by Maya. She was just the useful idiot who signed her name to a document placed in front of her by someone much closer to home."

Zora froze, her hand still resting on the sparkling crystal beads of the champagne gown. She turned slowly, her heart pounding in her ears as she looked at her mother, then at her father.

"What are they talking about?" Zora asked, her voice cracking. "Dad... what offshore property?"

Before Marcus could answer, the front glass doors of the boutique shattered with an earth-shattering explosion of sound and flying shards of crystal.
