Chapter 9 - The Trap Beneath the Tracks

The damp, metallic scent of stale air and hydraulic fluid drifted up from the subterranean stairwell as Arthur and Chloe descended into the darkened railway depot core. The beam of Chloe's tactical flashlight cut through the gloom, illuminating rows of rusted server racks that hummed with a low, unnatural vibration. In Arthur's arms, little Leo finally woke up, rubbing his big tearful eyes and clutching his scruffy teddy bear against his chest with a soft, frightened whimper.

"Grandpa, it's dark," Leo whispered, his lower lip trembling as he buried his face in Arthur's blue cardigan.

"It's okay, buddy. Grandpa's right here. We're just playing a game of hide and seek," Arthur murmured softly, his voice a steady anchor against the rising tide of adrenaline.

Chloe raised her weapon, sweeping the corners of the cavernous underground room before freezing in her tracks. "Arthur... look at the main terminal."

In the center of the concrete room, illuminated by the green glow of a dozen active monitors, sat Chief Miller. He wasn't wearing his police chief cap anymore; instead, he wore a dark tactical turtleneck, his injured wrist wrapped in a tight white bandage. Next to him stood two heavily armed mercenaries wearing unmarked black combat gear, their assault rifles leveled directly at the stairs.

"Welcome, Arthur," Miller said smoothly, clapping his uninjured hand twice in a slow, mocking rhythm. "I told you that you couldn't outrun the system. Every wire, every circuit, every satellite in this hemisphere answers to the board."

Arthur stepped forward, shielding Leo behind his leg while his hand instinctively closed around the heavy gold medal resting against his chest. "You're too late, Miller. The decentralized archives have already mirrored the proof of your involvement to a thousand independent servers worldwide."

Miller let out a cold, humorless chuckle, stepping closer to the central console. "Let them mirror whatever they want. Once the orbital strike grid goes live at midnight, every data center, every server farm, and every single person who ever downloaded your little file will be turned to ash. Dead men don't leak secrets."

Chloe made a sudden, lightning-fast move to draw her sidearm, but before her hand could clear the holster, a deafening crack echoed through the room as one of the mercenaries fired a suppressed round into the concrete floor inches from her boots, sending a shower of sharp stone shrapnel flying into the air.

"Don't even think about it, Agent," Miller sneered, stepping up to the main terminal and tapping a key on the glowing keyboard. "Now, Arthur. Hand over the gold medal. The biometric decryption chip inside that metal is the final piece required to authorize the launch sequence across the entire continental grid."

Arthur looked down at Leo, whose wide, tearful eyes stared directly up at him with absolute, heartbreaking trust.

"Never," Arthur whispered, his voice echoing with finality through the subterranean vault.
