Chapter 11 - The Digital Purge

A piercing, high-pitched alarm shrieked through the subterranean railway vault as the master-purge sequence engaged, turning the glowing red monitors instantly into a blinding cascade of cascading amber error codes. Chief Miller screamed in absolute fury, lunging across the console and grabbing Arthur by the collar of his blue cardigan with his uninjured hand, slamming him hard against the edge of the steel desk.
"What did you do?!" Miller roared, spittle flying from his lips as the main server racks behind them began to emit a loud, mechanical grinding noise accompanied by thick wisps of acrid white smoke.
Arthur didn't struggle against the chief's grip; instead, a grim, satisfied smile touched the corners of his mouth behind his thick glasses. "I just uploaded a self-replicating virus into your primary satellite uplink, Miller. Every single drone in your domestic surveillance grid is currently losing its navigation telemetry and crashing harmlessly into the Atlantic Ocean."
One of the mercenaries panicked, dropping his rifle and rushing toward the manual override breakers on the back wall, but it was already too late. A series of small internal explosions popped rhythmically down the row of server racks, shutting down the power grid completely and plunging the entire underground vault into absolute, pitch-black darkness.
Chloe moved with lethal speed in the sudden gloom. A dull thud echoed through the dark, followed immediately by the metallic clatter of an assault rifle hitting the concrete floor and a sharp groan of pain as one of the mercenaries was taken down by a swift, well-placed strike.
"Arthur! Grab Leo and run!" Chloe yelled over the deafening hiss of the emergency Halon fire-suppression gas beginning to flood the room.
Arthur scooped the trembling toddler into his arms, shielding Leo’s face against his shoulder as he navigated blindly through the choking white fog toward the escape ladder. Leo clutched his scruffy teddy bear tight, sobbing softly into Arthur's neck while the red emergency backup lights flickered weakly overhead, casting long, frantic shadows across the concrete walls.
As they reached the base of the ladder, a heavy hand grabbed Arthur's shoulder from behind, spinning him around with terrifying force. Miller stood in the red haze, his face blackened with soot and twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated hatred, holding a heavy backup pistol aimed directly at Arthur’s chest.
"You think you've won, you miserable old relic?" Miller snarled, his finger tightening slowly around the trigger as the emergency siren wailed in the background.

Before the hammer could fall, a bright flash of light illuminated the stairwell from above, accompanied by the familiar, unmistakable roar of a hundred shouting voices echoing down from the surface.
