Chapter 15 - The Legacy of the Gold Medal

The heavy steel blast door settled into the dirt with a thunderous thud, revealing a pristine, high-tech subterranean elevator shaft descending far deeper into the earth than any map had ever recorded. From the open doors of the elevator, a soft, pulsating blue light washed over the grass, illuminating the frozen crowd in an otherworldly glow.

Arthur didn't hesitate. He scooped little Leo up into his arms, holding the toddler and his scruffy teddy bear tight against his chest as he walked directly toward the open elevator entrance, ignoring the frantic shouts of the federal marshals behind him.

"Arthur, wait! We don't know what's down there!" Chloe yelled, running after him with her sidearm drawn.

"I built the master control core for this exact contingency thirty years ago," Arthur called back over his shoulder, his voice ringing with absolute, unshakeable calm. "The only way to stop a rogue system is to lock it inside a closed-loop vault where no satellite can ever reach it again."

Director Vance nodded slowly, tipping his head in a silent salute as he watched the old veteran step across the threshold. "Finish it, Arthur. End this once and for all."

Arthur stepped into the elevator cabin, placing little Leo down on the clean metal floor beside a small, built-in seat. The toddler looked up, his big tearful eyes reflecting the blue glow of the control panel, his little hands clutching his teddy bear with quiet courage.

"Are we going home now, grandpa?" Leo asked softly, his voice full of innocent trust.

Arthur knelt down on one knee, gently adjusting his glasses and smiling warmly at his grandson. "Yes, buddy," Arthur whispered, pressing a soft kiss to the top of the toddler's messy light hair. "We're going home. For good."
