Chapter 5 - The Rescue That Ignited a Revolution

The blinding beam of the tactical flashlight caught Chief Miller square in the eyes, forcing him to throw his arm up to shield his face while stumbling backward against a steel filing cabinet. The masked figure moved with lethal, practiced efficiency, stepping past Arthur and bringing the butt of a heavy submachine gun down onto Miller’s wrist with a sharp crack. Miller’s service pistol clattered uselessly across the concrete floor.

"Move, Arthur. We don't have twenty seconds before the backup detail realizes the manual overrides have been tripped," the masked operative said, her voice distorted by a voice-modulator mask but carrying a familiar, urgent cadence.

Arthur clutched the classified dossier tightly to his chest, his breath coming in short, controlled gasps. "And Leo? Is he safe?"

"He's with Chloe in the van outside. The whole exchange is being broadcasted live to three hundred servers simultaneously," the operative replied, grabbing Arthur by the arm and pulling him toward the subterranean emergency exit chute that led directly into the city's storm drainage network.

As they plunged into the damp, echoing concrete tunnels beneath the street, the sirens behind them flared back to life as the precinct's backup diesel generator finally kicked in. Red and blue lights cast erratic patterns against the wet curved walls, illuminating the rushing water at their feet. Arthur stumbled once, his blue cardigan catching on a protruding rusted bolt, but the operative hauled him upward without breaking stride.

Above ground, the scene outside the precinct had transformed into a full-scale public uprising. Thousands of citizens linked arms, forming an impenetrable human wall around the black sedan where little Leo sat safely inside on Chloe’s lap. The toddler clutched his scruffy teddy bear tightly, his big tearful eyes now wide with wonder as he looked out the window at the sea of handmade signs bearing his face and the words: PROTECT LEO. JUSTICE FOR VANCE.

Chief Miller, nursing his broken wrist, finally burst through the front entrance of the precinct flanked by a dozen heavily armed tactical officers. He raised his uninjured hand, pointing frantically toward the black sedan. "Arrest everyone! Clear the street! That vehicle contains stolen classified property!"

The crowd surged forward in unison, drowning out Miller’s commands with a deafening chorus of boos and chants. Reporters thrust their microphones toward the car windows, their cameras zooming in on Leo’s face as the toddler held his teddy bear up to the glass for the entire nation to see.

Inside the van, Chloe adjusted her baseball cap, tapping her phone screen to confirm that the encrypted archive file had successfully uploaded to a decentralized global archive. She looked down at Leo, who had finally stopped crying and was pointing a tiny finger at the live broadcast screen on the dashboard.

"Grandpa coming home?" Leo asked softly, his voice trembling with innocent hope.

Chloe swallowed the lump in her throat, forcing a reassuring smile as she looked out the back window into the dark, threatening mouth of the storm drain. "Yes, buddy," she whispered, her eyes locking onto the figure emerging from the shadows below. "Grandpa is coming home."
