Chapter 1 - The Amber Light of Betrayal

The amber light of the late afternoon sun cut horizontally across the green turf of Maplewood Park, glinting off the heavy gold medal resting against Arthur’s chest. For a fleeting second, the world felt safe. Two-year-old Leo sat in the blue denim overalls adorned with a cheerful duck embroidery, clutching his small, scruffy teddy bear while Arthur pushed him gently on the swing. Then, the silence fractured. The sharp, silent-pulsing crimson and blue flashes from a cruiser pierced the canopy of oaks. Arthur turned, his gaze locking onto the vehicle. Without a word, a lifetime of quiet dignity dissolved into sheer panic. He dropped the iron chains of the swing. He ran.
Leo was left swinging forward, his tiny body propelled by momentum into an empty, terrifying void. Within seconds, two officers in dark blue uniforms closed the distance, tackling Arthur to the earth. The third officer, wearing a crisp white police chief shirt and cap, walked slowly behind them, his face impassive. Leo scrambled out of the swing, his white sneakers with colorful stripes hitting the dirt. He dropped his teddy bear, small arms outstretched toward the tangled heap of limbs on the grass.
"No! Leave grandpa, please, please!" Leo screamed, his face crumpled in genuine terror.
The chief knelt down, looking past the toddler toward the restrained elder. "Arthur Vance. You thought you could run from the Department of Defense forever? That medal doesn't grant you immunity."
"I ran to protect him, Chief Miller!" Arthur shouted, his voice cracking as his arms were wrenched behind his back in a cruel, binding grip. "He's just a baby! He has no one else!"
"You should have thought of that before you leaked the classified propulsion schematics," Miller retorted coldly, gesturing for the officers to haul Arthur to his feet.
Leo stumbled forward, tears streaming down his cheeks, staring directly into the camera lens with wide, bewildered eyes, his small hands trembling in the empty air.
"Please follow, comment, save grandpa!" Leo sobbed desperately into the void.
