Chapter 7 - The Voice from the Dead

The shortwave radio emitted another sharp crackle of static before a raspy, mechanically distorted voice broke through the speaker, filling the quiet cabin with a chilling familiarity that made Arthur drop his coffee mug onto the wooden floor. The ceramic shattered into a dozen pieces, dark liquid spreading like a stain across the old boards.
"Arthur... if you're hearing this frequency, it means the gold medal's tracking beacon finally broke through the orbital encryption firewall," the voice rasped, pausing to draw a ragged breath. "Miller is just a pawn. The entire Department of Defense acquisitions board has already authorized a kinetic strike on your coordinates."
Chloe lunged across the room, grabbing the microphone off the radio desk and pressing the transmit button with fierce urgency. "Identify yourself! Who is this? How do you have access to this secure frequency?"
"There's no time for security protocols, agent," the voice replied, coughing violently in the background as the sound of distant klaxons wailed through the open microphone. "My name is Director Vance. And I never boarded that flight five years ago."
Arthur staggered backward, his hands trembling as he gripped the edge of the oak table for support. His knuckles turned stark white. "Sarah's father... no. You died in the Atlantic test crash. I saw the casualty reports, I attended the closed-casket funeral!"
"It was all a fabricated execution to force you into silence while they stole your propulsion patents, Arthur!" the voice shouted over the rising roar of sirens on the other end. "They gave me a choice: disappear into a black site prison forever, or watch my daughter and grandson get eliminated one by one. I chose the cage to keep you and Sarah alive, but Sarah found out the truth anyway. That's why they killed her!"
In the corner of the room, little Leo stirred in his sleep, whimpering softly as he rolled over and clutched his teddy bear closer to his chest. Arthur stared at the shortwave radio, his mind reeling as the horrifying puzzle pieces finally snapped into a cohesive, monstrous picture.
"Where are you?" Arthur demanded, his voice dropping to a dangerous, low rumble.
"Deep beneath the abandoned silo in sector four," Director Vance answered, his signal rapidly breaking up into bursts of white noise. "The access codes to shut down the entire domestic drone network are stored in the secondary core. But to unlock them, you need the physical biometric signature from the gold medal you're wearing, combined with—"
The transmission was instantly cut off by a deafening shriek of electronic feedback, followed by total, suffocating silence.
Chloe rushed to the window, throwing the cracked blinds wide open just as a searing streak of white light tore across the midnight sky from the south, illuminating the entire pine canopy in a ghastly, daylight glare.

"Arthur," Chloe breathed, her face turning pale as she pointed toward the horizon where a column of smoke was already rising rapidly above the distant tree line. "They didn't just trace the signal... they just leveled the entire missile silo."
