Chapter 2 - The Broadcast That Stunned the Nation

The live feed from Maplewood Park hit millions of living rooms across America within minutes, freezing dinners on forks and silencing idle chatter in diners from coast to coast. The image of the weeping toddler in yellow and blue overalls holding his hands up to a television screen burned itself into the collective conscience of the public. Studio anchors scrambled for words as the chyron flashed across the bottom of the screen: DECORATED VETERAN ARRESTED; GRANDSON LEFT ALONE AT SCENE.

Inside the precinct holding room, the fluorescent lights buzzed with a low, agonizing frequency. Arthur sat on a bolted metal bench, his blue cardigan rumpled, the heavy gold medal—awarded decades ago for extreme valor during a classified aerospace operation—still hanging around his neck like an anchor of shame. Chief Miller stood on the other side of the thick wire-reinforced glass, holding a manila folder stuffed with photocopied documents.

"You made a mistake coming out of hiding, Arthur," Miller said through the intercom speaker, his voice dripping with synthetic sympathy. "The Pentagon doesn't care about your grandson. They care about the missing hard drive. Where is the source code for the Vanguard project?"

Arthur raised his head, his lined face hardened by a deep, unwavering resolve. His eyes, magnified by his thick glasses, locked onto Miller with chilling intensity. "I didn't leak the code to sell it, Miller. I leaked it because your division was planning to mount it onto autonomous drones designed for domestic surveillance. You were going to use it against American citizens."

Miller let out a sharp, humorless laugh that echoed through the metallic room. "And who do you think is going to believe a tired old man accused of treason? The public already sees you as a fugitive. By tomorrow morning, Child Protective Services will have the boy in a state facility, and you will be transferred to a black site where no one will ever hear you speak again."

Arthur’s hands curled into tight fists against his knees. "You touch that boy, and I swear I will release the failsafe encryption keys to every major news outlet in the Northern Hemisphere."

Miller’s smile vanished instantly, replaced by a mask of cold fury. He tapped the glass twice with his signet ring. "You’re bluffing, Arthur. You love that kid too much to risk his immediate safety with a media circus."

Before Arthur could deliver a biting retort, the heavy steel door behind Miller creaked open. A junior officer stepped inside, whispering frantically into the chief’s ear while glancing nervously at the security monitor overhead.

"Sir," the officer stammered, his face pale. "We have a massive problem. The live stream from the park... it's been downloaded and mirrored by an anonymous hacktivist collective. They’ve locked every single terminal in the precinct, and they’re demanding Arthur’s immediate release or they'll dump the entire Pentagon budget audit onto the dark web."
