Chapter 13 - The Reckoning at Dawn

The sleek black SUVs of the Federal Marshals Office pulled up in a disciplined convoy around the railway depot, their doors opening in unison as agents in tactical vests stepped out to secure the perimeter. Chief Miller was hauled out of the subterranean hatch in handcuffs, his head bowed low in disgrace as flashbulbs strobed endlessly around him like a relentless storm of lightning.

Director Vance stood beside Arthur, his hand resting firmly on the old veteran's shoulder as they watched the corruption of the defense board unravel in broad daylight. "The internal affairs division has already seized the main servers at the Pentagon," Vance said quietly, coughing slightly into a handkerchief before continuing. "Every illegal contract, every suppressed patent, and every fabricated casualty report has been downloaded and secured by the federal grand jury."

Arthur nodded slowly, his fingersabsentmindedly tracing the edge of the gold medal hanging against his blue cardigan. "It took too long, Vance. Sarah shouldn't have had to pay the ultimate price for us to finally clean house."

"She didn't die in vain," Vance replied, his voice firm with absolute conviction. "Because of what you and Leo did—because the world saw an innocent two-year-old standing up for his grandfather on live television—millions of people woke up today demanding transparency. That’s a legacy no cover-up can ever erase."

Little Leo sat on the hood of a nearby federal SUV, happily playing with his scruffy teddy bear while a kind-skinned female federal agent offered him a colorful juice box and a warm smile. The toddler giggled, pointing a tiny finger at the flashing red and blue lights of the cruiser parked nearby without a trace of the terror he had felt just hours before at the park.

Chloe walked over, handing Arthur a thick manila envelope bearing the official seal of the United States District Court. "Your full pardon, Arthur. Signed by the Attorney General ten minutes ago. Your record is officially cleared of all treason charges."

Arthur opened the envelope, scanning the crisp legal prose with tired, grateful eyes. The heavy weight that had burdened his shoulders for five long years finally lifted, leaving him feeling lighter than he had since the day his daughter was taken from them.

"What about the foundation?" Arthur asked, looking up at Chloe and Director Vance.

"We're establishing the Sarah Vance Memorial Trust," Vance answered, a faint, proud smile touching his lips. "Dedicated to protecting whistleblowers and ensuring that autonomous military technology never again targets American citizens."
