Chapter 9 - The Federal Interception

Agent Vance descended the stairs with terrifying speed, her service weapon drawn and leveled directly at the center of Leo’s chest. The black tactical Sig Sauer held an unyielding authority that silenced the foyer instantly.
“Federal agent! Drop the weapon right now or I will open fire!” Agent Vance shouted, her voice echoing off the hardwood walls.
Leo froze mid-swing, the heavy iron fireplace poker trembling in his grip. His eyes darted from the black barrel of the gun to Agent Vance’s cold, unblinking eyes, and then back down to Claire, who hadn’t moved a muscle.
“I didn’t do anything! I’m just looking for my brother!” Leo stammered, his drunken bravado instantly dissolving into cowardly panic. He let go of the iron poker, letting it crash heavily onto the entryway tile.
“Turn around, put your hands behind your back, and interlace your fingers,” Agent Vance commanded, stepping off the bottom stair and kicking the poker away with her boot.
As Leo slowly complied, whining about his rights, Mark appeared at the top of the stairs, flanked by the heavy silence of the hallway. Handcuffed and defeated, Mark stared down at his brother with sheer contempt.
“You idiot, Leo. You absolute moron, you ruined everything,” Mark spat, his voice cracking with frustration.
“Shut up, Palmer, you’re next,” Agent Vance muttered, pulling a second pair of cuffs from her belt and snapping them onto Leo’s wrists with practiced efficiency.
Claire exhaled slowly, the massive weight on her chest finally lightening by a fraction. She turned around and looked up the stairs, where Sophia’s tear-streaked face was peeking through the crack of her bedroom door. Claire offered a reassuring, gentle smile, raising a hand to wave her down.
“It’s okay, baby. Come on down. The bad men are leaving,” Claire called out softly.
Sophia stepped out of the room, slowly descending the wooden steps, her pink hoodie brushing against the banister. She walked straight into Claire’s open arms, burying her face in her mother's blue cardigan and sobbing tears of relief.
Claire wrapped her arms tightly around her daughter, kissing the top of her head while keeping her eyes fixed on the two handcuffed brothers being led out the front door into the flashing red and blue lights of newly arrived squad cars.
Agent Vance lingered for a moment, sliding her notepad back into her blazer pocket. She looked at Claire with a newfound respect.
“You handled that like a veteran operative, Mrs. Palmer,” Agent Vance said quietly. “But the federal freeze only covers the financial assets. What about the property dispute? That’s still a civil nightmare waiting in probate court.”
Claire looked down at Sophia, then back at the federal agent. A cold, determined smile touched the corners of her mouth.
“Let them try probate,” Claire said softly. “I have a copy of the original trust agreement that Mark didn't even know existed.”
Agent Vance raised an eyebrow. “Where is it?”

Before Claire could answer, a loud, violent pounding echoed from the back patio door, shattering the momentary peace.
