Chapter 3 - The Title Deed Trap

Mark’s pupils constricted. The aggressive posture faltered for a fraction of a second, replaced by a sudden, ugly confusion. He let out a harsh, nervous breath, his hand wraps rubbing together as he clenched and unclenched his fists.

“What did you say?” Mark barked, his voice rising an octave as insecurity pierced his armor of faux machismo. He stepped closer, trying to intimidate her physically, but Claire stood her ground like a marble pillar.

“You heard me, Mark,” Claire said, her voice cutting through the humid evening air with absolute precision. “The house was never yours. The loan was approved under my maiden name, backed by the trust fund my grandfather left specifically to keep me clear of men who confuse intimidation with strength.”

Mark lunged forward, grabbing the lapels of her blue cardigan, shaking her with sudden violence. “You lying bitch! The business, the accounts, the property—it’s all tied to my credit!”

“Your credit died six months ago when you maxed out the lines on those crypto schemes,” Claire whispered, her gaze dropping to his trembling hands gripping her sweater. She didn’t struggle. She simply let him look at her face—calm, unblinking, and entirely in control. “You’ve been living on a financial cliff, Mark. And I just cut the rope.”

A vein throbbed violently on Mark’s forehead. He raised his right hand, the heavily taped fist drawing back in a reflex of pure, unadulterated rage, ready to strike a blow that would end all arguments. The neighbors across the street finally opened their front door, a middle-aged man stepping onto his porch with a phone pressed frantically to his ear.

“Mark! Drop your hands!” the neighbor yelled across the asphalt.

Mark ignored him, his eyes locked on Claire. The punch hung in the air, a centimeter from her cheekbone. The wind died down completely. The neighborhood held its collective breath.

Claire didn’t blink. She reached up with agonizing slowness and gently tapped the underside of his raised wrist.

“If you hit me,” Claire whispered, her voice dropping into a register that made Mark’s breath hitch, “the sheriff’s deputies currently raiding your downtown storage locker will find the hard drives you paid cash to hide.”

Mark’s arm dropped instantly. His mouth fell open, color draining completely from his bearded face as the implications crashed over him.
